Is Maui Really No Ka 'Oi?
Let's find out, shall we? This page was inspired by the (now discontinued) flickrTagFight. That page was powered by the Flickr API and allowed someone to enter two opposite tags (i.e. Cats and Dogs) and see which one has more photos on Flickr.
Here, we take it a step further and use it to find all the number of photos tagged for each of the Hawaiian Islands, and let the numbers tell the story of which island is the best (based on Flickr photo fanatics). And since Flickr averages about 3,000 new photos a minute (albeit not all from Hawaii), these numbers are updated every hour.
The Numbers by Flickr Tags
| Island | Total Photos |
|---|---|
| Big Island | 239,734 |
| Kauai | 463,339 |
| Maui | 833,644 |
| Oahu | 655,079 |
| Lanai | 21,801 |
| Molokai | 30,792 |
The Numbers by Flickr Tags - Last 7 Days
| Island | Total Photos |
|---|---|
| Big Island | 315 |
| Kauai | 1,268 |
| Maui | 2,011 |
| Oahu | 2,471 |
| Lanai | 10 |
| Molokai | 162 |
But The Numbers Look Off...
It appears that, for some reason I haven't determined yet, the numbers displayed above that are returned from the Flickr API don't exactly match the number of photos that are displayed on the Flickr search page itself. For example, if you click on the Maui link in the data table, the number of photos from the grid on this page doesn't match up with the number of photos on the Flickr page. It must have something to do with how often the data available from the API methods is refreshed.
New Geotagged Version
Are tag names the only way to track a photo's location? Of course not. That's why we've added a geotagged version of this comparison. Is Maui still #1?
