Although there aren't many dining options in Hana, the restaurant at the Hotel Hana Maui offers great food and service as if it was competing with other fine estabilishments right next door. Ka'uiki, which we later to find out later was the official name of the restaurant, offers both lunch and dinner that lives up to the level of luxury and sophistication that the hotel itself is known for.
The indoor pavillion features a high ceiling with lovely ribbons and other decor giving you a nice open air feeling while dining. It mimics the same openness that you experience when in Hana. The tables are very well spaced, so you don't have that cramped feeling while you dine, and weather permitting, there is even an outdoor patio area if you'd like to get a closer view of the ocean.
Notes
Our lunch time experience with Ka'uiki was actually included in a tour we were on along the Road to Hana. Compared to the picnic lunch we had on our previous Hana tour, this was much nicer. The lunch menu featured a nice range of island favorites, from fish to salads and sandwiches. The wait staff couldn't be nicer, and aside from our tour group coming in all at once (about 20 of us), I can see how it would be a very peaceful place to eat.
We didn't get that much time to walk around the hotel area itself, because of the tour schedule. From what we did see, there was so much greenery and an overall quiet in the air that is hard to describe. It could have also been the time of day we stopped by, which I don't recall at the moment. Most people who are driving to Hana for the first time are more interested in seeing everything rather than planning where to eat, so that could be part of it as well.
From what I've read online, it seems like the dinner experience is just as nice. Cindy and I are planning an overnight stay at the Hotel Hana Maui on our next trip, so we'll soon have more details on this dining option.
