Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole
There has been more written about Israel Kamakawiwo'ole over the past 30 years than any other Hawaiian musician in history, if not any other Hawaiian period.
IZ did more for bringing the sounds of Hawaii to the rest of the world than anyone else before him or since his death in 1997. Everyone that has ever visited the islands of Hawaii has in no doubt heard one of his songs somewhere along their journeys, and many fans of all things Hawaii have at least one of his songs or albums close to their hearts.
While there is no official website for Israel (that we could find so far), his page on wikipedia offers just a small glimpse of who this man really was and the profound impact he has had on modern day Hawaiians. There have been many newspaper and magazine articles published over the years that pay tribute to the life and music of Israel, and the book, IZ: Voice of the People, is perhaps the closest look into the life of this great man.
While he died before his time, Israel was a gifted musician and entertainer. Just a few minutes after listening to or watching any of his live performances and you'll realize how much he enjoyed performing the music of his land.
