We thought it'd be fun to create this little page where you can enter you home location and calcluate how far away your are from Maui. You can also see recent searches by other visitors to see where your distance ranks in the list.

We realize that Maui is a popular destination for people from countries all over the world, but unfortunately, we have only been able to set this up for cities in the United States at the current time.

How it works
First, we find your location based on the information you enter. Your location is translated into latitude and longitude coordinates using web services provided by geocoder.us, which bases its data from the US Census information. That information is used at the origin location.

Next, we lookup the coordinates of the destination location that you selected from the list of cities in Maui. With both of those locations known, we apply an algorithm similar to (but not quite) this one that calculates the direct line distance between two points on a map. Obviously, your favorite airline doesn't fly in straight lines, but you get the general idea.

We plot that information on the map above, and provide some additional history on other people's recent searches for the destination you selected. And that's it.
