I believe that the United States illegally took over Hawaii against the people's wishes. With 620,000 in Hawaii in 1959 only 120,000 voted. Why didn't the other 500,000 vote? True, that the majority of the 120,000 who voted, voted for statehood. But the ballot was fraud. There was nothing on it for Independence. If you were in the Military and lived there for two years you could vote. If you were a foreigner and lived there for thirty years and were not a citizen you couldn't vote. If you were a Hawaiian and not a citizen you couldn't vote. We invaded their land in 1893 and just took over. We got rid of their Queen. It's no wonder they fly their flag upside down.

Aloha Lyndsey, and congrats!

The good news is, there is so much to do on Maui for folks with all different types of interests, you shouldn't have any problems finding things to do once you get started. The bad news is, there's too much to do in one trip, so don't let that stress you out. That just means you a reason to go back again...and again and again :)

A lot of your personal interests and preferences go into planning the right Maui vacation, but once you have an idea of what types of things your looking for (fancy dining, shopping, hiking/adventures, water activities, beach hopping, etc.) then it comes down to how long you're there for.

There was a travel guide book from about 3-4 years ago that I really liked, but I don't know if it's been updated recently with a lot of new info.

http://www.amazon.com/Maui-Lonely-Planet-Glenda-Bendure/dp/1741047145/ref=sr_1_9?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1352048081&sr=1-9&keywords=maui+travel+guides

http://www.amazon.com/Frommers-Maui-Day-Pocket/dp/0470497637/ref=pd_sim_b_5

The premise of the book, however, was to over different trip itineraries based on interests and the number of days you'll be on the island, which is kind of the approach I like to recommend.

On that note, for awhile we were able to carve out a two-week vacation to Maui once a year, and what we'd like to do was plan activities for the first week and then just decide what to do (or do nothing) for the second week while we're there.

If you have at least 7 days on the island, that might be something worth doing - setting the last day or two to be free time. If it's shorter, than it becomes a question of prioritization and then deciding if this is a one-time only trip or whether you're planning to go back to Maui and see a little more each time.

Although I don't have sort of a vacation planning guide or anything interactive built into the site, feel free to email me at dailymauiphoto@gmail.com if you wanted a few more ideas and wanted to share when you're going, how longer you're staying, which part of the island you're staying on, and what are your general interests, and I can call out a few more specialized suggestions based on that.

Either way, the key is to enjoy the planning and definitely enjoy the trip.

All the best,
- Kris

Not sure which picture you're looking at, but I haven't had the honor of flying out of or into the Kapalua Airport. We don't take too many inter-island flights while we visit, but I can see how it would be so convenient for those staying in West Maui and not having to drive through Lahaina and around the mountain to get back to Kahului.

Thanks for the info.

Thank you for sharing your comments. I think many cultures still have their traditions and ways of doing things that they wish to preserve and pass on to their children and grandchildren.

And I can sympathize with the feelings of being "invaded" and taken over as part of the United States. I don't have the advantage of seeing what is happening around the islands on a day to day basis, but thanks to social networks like Facebook and Twitter, and the kind Aloha my family has received on many trips to the islands, we have made great friends, both kama'aina and born on the islands, that we keep in touch with regularly.

Everyone has their own story, but they all seem to be doing things and focusing the energy on improving the stability and life on the islands. It put things in perspective for those of us on the mainland who may sometimes take things for granted now and then.

The past events being what they were, I am encouraged by all the positive Aloha and initiatives that I'm exposed to from afar, that many common visitors might not notice when they're visiting for the first time.
