Poster Title: Must See Maui

View Ordering Options

As promised earlier in the week, I’m planning to share some of the posters featured in my first Maui eBook, Maui by Poster. And to kick things off, why not start of with what might be my favorite one of the bunch. Talk about a crowded field to choose from! :)

About: Must See Maui

There is no doubt that an unlimited number of subjects come to mind when you try to define what is “must see” when talking about Maui. Yet, for some reason these hidden waterfalls that are accessible only by helicopter have always struck me as belonging near the top of that list.

Perhaps there’s a personal biased in me, since looking at this photo instantly reminds me of hanging out the side of a doorless helicopter during the ’09 Maui Photo Festival, and how big of a thrill that was. Putting that aside, my initial test print of this poster came out just beautifully, and now it only needs a home on a wall in our house.

Sunday Photo: Bridge at Oheo Gulch

Bridge at Oheo Gulch

Taken by Kris Nelson on February 24th, 2009
Location: Oheo Gulch at Haleakala National State Park

Lots of good stuff this week, but let’s start with the photo. The shot above one of the photos I got soaked for when visiting the Oheo Gulch earlier this year. Regardless of the fact that my cell phone never recovered and we had to take a pass on our hike to Waimoku Falls along the Pipiwai Trails, I’m still pretty happy with the way it came out. :)

I know I’ve already said this quite a few times now, but spending the night in Hana and being able to make it out to the park before the majority of the crowds was a great idea. Highly recommended if you’re able to fit it into your vacation schedule.

Two Weeks to Takeoff

Now, onto the countdown to our next Maui trip. We leave in just two weeks, and just because we finally wrapped up all the travel arrangements, it doesn’t mean it’s just smooth sailing from here on out.

I posted some of our initial Trip 5 ideas already, and now it’s time to start making those reservations. There’s also a few omissions that I left out. First of all, Cindy wants to go parasailing. Yup, something she hasn’t been able to try the last few trips because of whale season. Me, I plan on tagging along just to snap some neat photos, but don’t have any desire to take the plunge.

I also mentioned last week that we wanted to make it out to Baldwin Beach near Paia, which we passed up on on our way back from Hana in February. Well, we hope to make it more than just a trip to the beach, and thanks to a post from Liza at A Maui Blog, I’m inspired to plan a longer visit to Paia that day. Read her post on why she loves Paia town to see some of the things we’re going to look into.

Shooting on top of the world

Gearing Up

Not forgetting the primary reason for this trip is to attend the Maui Photo Festival, I still have quite a few things to do in order to prepare for all the learning and shooting I’m going to be doing. I started this list over at my photography blog, and so far the only item I can cross off is the new gear I ordered from Adorama. It should be arriving this week, just in time to test it out for a bit before we leave.

As for the other items on that list, I hope to cross more of them off today, or early this week. As you can tell, there isn’t much time left. But, as seriously as I want to start taking my photography, I really do need to make more time for it on top of everything else I do on a weekly basis.

Sunday Photo #75

Lastly, it seems like only yesterday I was talking about my first Maui photo as the 50th edition in my Sunday Photo Series. Well, as fast as this summer has zipped by, I’m already up to #75 with today’s post. I like the feeling that I’ve been able to share all my favorite photos with all of you over these past two years, and am excited that I still have so many to post and more future trips to Maui that will allow me to continue sharing the Aloha for years to come.

Here’s to another 75!

Mahalo and Aloha,

Hanawi Falls

Taken by Kris Nelson on February 23rd, 2009
Location: Mile Marker 24, Road to Hana, Maui

We had an amazing time driving to Hana this year. Our past two visits along the windy road was with a tour group, so while we learned so much from the tour guides, many of our photo opportunities were rushed.

Since we made the drive this time, and stayed in Hana overnight, we literally had all day to enjoy the sights and stops along the way. In particular, we saved quite a bit of time for hiking up to lesser known waterfalls and actually having time to take more than just 2-3 pictures of them each.

This week’s Sunday Photo showcases one of the results of having that extra time to ourselves. It’s of Hanawi Falls, about 10 miles before Hana. Compare that to the one from last year when I had all of 90 seconds to shoot before getting back on the bus.

Hanawi Falls

As you can see, quite a difference. It’s worth mentioning that it was raining pretty hard last year when I took this photo (you can see it in the black part of the cave in the bigger version), and I’ve also had a ton more practice in the past year, too.

Touching on that last point about having a lot more practice between this and our last trip, I’m still going through the volumes of photos I’ve taken this trip, and have been pretty happy with the results. It looks like we’re going to be having some really nice Sunday Photos in our series for the rest of this year!

Sunday Photo: Base of Wailua Falls

Base of Wailua Falls
Base of Wailua Falls
Taken by Kris Nelson on April 15th, 2008
Location: Wailua Falls, East Maui

This week’s Sunday Photo comes to you thanks to our Maui Photo Day Calendar, and is a view from the base of Wailua Falls along the Road to Hana. If you’ve been using our Day Calendar on your iGoogle page (mahalo for that), you’d likely noticed that this month’s theme has been the Road to Hana, and this photo here was featured this past Thursday.

Wailua Falls is a popular spot along the Hana Hwy, and often a place where many people turn around to head back. Having your photo taken in front of the falls gives folks at home some sense of how tall this waterfall is, but it’s even bigger in person. In fact, this being the second time we’ve stopped here, I myself didn’t appreciate the size of this towering sight until I was able to climb down the rocks to the base and take photos like this. Truly one of the highlights of my day.

Still counting down to our next trip and more great photos in our Sunday Photo series. Be sure to countdown with us here at the blog as February 15th gets closer and closer.

Sunday Photo: Hidden Waterfall

Hidden Waterfal
Hidden Waterfall
Taken by Kris Nelson on June 4, 2006
Location: Somewhere above Maui

Continuing from last week’s photo, here is another shot from high above Maui that we took on our helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. This hidden waterfall is one of the many that you can only see from a helicopter, and surely the vantage point from a helicopter window can’t do justice to the actual size of this towering sight.

I don’t know where exactly we were above Maui when I took this photo, so trying to identify this particular waterfall is rather tricky. We did receive a DVD of our helicopter tour (which was well worth the additional $20), and I’ve been meaning to watch it for the past few weeks now. Maybe that will help put some context to where about this treasure was found, but even if it remains nameless, it’s still amazing!
If you’d like to see more photos from this helicopter tour, you can see them in our Maui from Above photoset in our photo gallery. Also, if you are already using our Maui Photo Day Calendar gadget, you’ll notice that this photo is featured as today’s gem.
