A Familiar Afternoon

Trip Journal entry for Monday, February 16th.

It felt good to be back and visiting all of our favorite places again.
Back at the Resort
As I mentioned in the morning journal entry for Monday, we had all that excitement atop Haleakala and were back at the resort by Noon. You’d think with the lack of sleep, we’d be dragging a little bit, but for some reason that wasn’t the case. When we got back to our room, we were reminded that we never really unpacked and that our luggage was still laying on the floor, mostly full. We thought about unpacking, but the view from our lanai was calling us.
Our Lanai
So, we decided to leave the bags for now and unpack later that night when there weren’t so many wonderful things to look at outside. We spent maybe 45 minutes, just enjoy the view of the ocean and all the activities out on the water before we made our way out to Whalers Village.
A New Whalers Village
Whalers Village has always been a big part of our trip these past 4 years. It’s only about a 5 minute walk from the Sheraton, and we usually stop there at least once a day. It’s been pretty much the same for the first three years (other than a new sign out front), but we didn’t expect some of the changes that we found this year.
The first was visible right from the beachwalk. The Rusty Harpoon right next to Hula Grill is gone, and is in the process of being replaced. We were there on our first trip, and although we ourselves weren’t overly thrilled with the service there, it always seemed to have a big crowd. Maybe it’s because of the economy, or maybe other reasons, I can’t say for sure.
Next, we started noticing some of the different stores that were removed and ones that were added. Borders Express was gone, but I mentioned that last month after reading in online. That was always a good place to pickup neat Hawaii stationary, calendars, and other little gifts for folks back home. Also gone, Ritz Camera. While I already travel with quite a bit of camera gear, it was good having that Ritz to run to whenever I needed something last minute or just had a question. Now, I’ll have to drive to the one in Lahaina Town.
The next store we found was another one of those cosmic signs calling us to move here. :)  Not too long ago, I posted about where I found hockey on Maui, which has always been a part of my entire life. Well, one of Cindy’s hobbies made it to the Valley Isle as well, Swarovski. Needless to say, she was thrilled and in the door no more than 5 minutes before she was chatting up one of the sales ladies. Turns out they’ve only been open since December. What timing.
…We All Scream for Ice Cream
Since we did eat a relatively late breakfast, we weren’t exactly looking for lunch at 1pm. But it was time to treat ourselves to a little Haagen-Dazs. That place always seems to be busy when we’re there, and I can only imagine what our freezer back home would look like if they ever were to sell that Macadamia Nut ice cream back on the mainland.
Once we finished indulging, we did a little shopping at the ABC Store. The main goal there was to pick up a pair of swim trunks for me and another beach towel, which took all of 10 minutes. With that out of the way, we did a little more walking around and checking out the other changes at Whalers.  Nikki’s Pizza was still in the food court (thank heavens), as they have the most ono Hawaiian pizza I’ve tasted anywhere. Tiffany’s and the Body Shop were gone, and actually used to be right next to where Swarovski now is. I guess we were a little distracted at first to notice.
Before long, we started to make our way back to the Sheraton along the beachwalk. This being our first trip during one of the busy seasons here on Hawaii, there were a lot more people on Ka’anapali Beach than we had seen before. I know we shouldn’t have been surprised, but I guess it just goes to show you that people still need their Hawaii fix these days.
A Little Downtime
After our walk to Whalers, we had a little downtime in our room. Cindy took time to write in her journal (the ol’ fashion pen and paper one), and I tried to blog a little bit. I did manage to squeeze our the Sunday Photo post for this week (although it was Monday), but found it pretty hard to concentrate. Plus, I think the reality of everything we had seen that morning at Haleakala was still just settling in, as well as the warmth and Aloha of being back here on Maui again.
Cindy might have dozed off for a little bit, too. She totally earned it for being such a great sport and getting up way too early than she probably ever would have before.
On with the Tradition
By now, it was getting to be time for dinner, and for those that have been reading our blog recently or have followed us on previous trips, there’s that one place we always head to for dinner on that first evening. Cheeseburgerland! While we don’t actually order cheeseburgers at Cheeseburger in Paradise, we do have our favorites. Dinner was great as always, and it was kinda funny to have the same waiter we had last year, and see the ones we’ve had previously still working there. Or maybe it’s just funny that we remember them. Either way, another year, and the tradition lives on.
It felt so good to be back on Front Street again. So many familiar sites, like the guy with the parrots outside the Pioneer Inn and that big old Banyan Tree near the harbor. The Lahaina Town we know and love, still crowded with cars and people. That was a good sign.
Speaking of Front Street, we’re taking it home with us!
Allow me to explain. Cindy’s aunt is friends with an artist that spends quite a bit of here on Maui, and is one of the featured artists at Maui Hands this month. His name is Mort Luby, and has been painting on Maui for quite a few years now. We received one of his paintings as a gift when we moved into our condo (aka our first home) a few years ago, and just had to check out more of his work.
While we were there, we saw this painting Mort made of Front Street that we just had to have. It’s a view looking Northwest down Front Street, and it was neat because we could actually name some of the restaurants and stores in the painting, just by looking at th
e shape of the buildings. I’m planning to size up a photograph of a similar scene and when we get home, hang them up side by side, my photograph and his painting. It should look pretty cool.
Mort is actually going to be at the Maui Hands location along Front Street on Fridays this month, but we’re totally bummed because we’ll be down near Wailea this week for our portrait session and in Kahului next week for the Hapa concert. I think it’d be really fun to chat with him and watch him paint, but we know there will be other times.  Both Mort and his wife, as well as Cindy and I, aren’t planning to remove Maui from our lives anytime soon.
Let the Shopping Begin
After the visit to Maui Hands, it was time to get down to business.  I mentioned above that Cindy and I have a portrait session on Friday, so it was time to start hunting down an outfit for her and a new shirt for me. We window shopped for a little bit, but found ourselves at Serendipity on Front Street.
Now, maybe Cindy just humors me, or maybe I have a hidden talent that I’m not ready to admit to, but I’ll usually try and help her find different tops or combonations while she’s shopping. Well, this time she didn’t need me because Cindy received such great personal customer service from one of the salespeople at Serendipity. I tell you, it was like two girlfriends in front of a big closet picking out clothes for a date. Yet another prime example of how the Aloha Spirit here on the islands is so wonderful and how friendly and welcoming people are here. Unlike anything I’ve every seen elsewhere. Truly amazing.
Time for Bed Yet?
Okay, so by now it was all of about 8pm, and we were starting to feel exhausted. We still had enough energy to stop at the Lahaina Cannery Mall for a little bit of Starbucks and shopping at Safeway. We didn’t pick up as many groceries as we normally do this early on our trip, but none-the-less, we were still there and with our own bags. Before long, we were back at the resort, put the groceries in the mini-fridge, unpacked the rest of our luggage, and were asleep by 9pm.
What a day!

Sunday Photo: Special 50th Edition

Cheeseburger in Paradise
Cheeseburger in Paradise
Taken by Kris Nelson on September 10th, 2007
Location: Cheeseburger in Paradise, Lahaina

Wow, where does the time go? Not only are the final weeks before our upcoming trip to Maui just flying by, this week’s photo in our Sunday Photo series marks the 50th edition in a series I started back in October ’07. That’s a lot of Sundays, and something that I’ve had a lot of fun sharing.

This week’s photo was taken on one of our visits to Cheeseburger in Paradise in Lahaina. What we hadn’t noticed in previous meals there was that the chairs all had different place names on the back of them. We probably didn’t notice because we were enjoying the view of the harbor from the upstairs dining area.

Anyway, there were a few chairs that said Lahaina, Oahu, Waikiki, and of course, Maui. Seemed like a pretty neat thing at time, so we picked up the camera and snapped away. Cheeseburger is one of those places that has a lot of neat little things and signs hanging up all over the place, and I snapped a few others as well. This one was another one of my favorites.

Welcome to Lahaina

I can’t really vouch for the accuracy of those numbers back from 1846, but it was still intriguing none-the-less. View the larger version of the photo to get a better look at the numbers I’m referring to.

Happy 50!!!
50 seems to be a popular number these days. Here are a few fun facts related to the 50 milestone:
  • Most people already know that Hawaii was the 50th U.S. state.
  • Not as many people realize that Hawaii will be celebrating 50 years of statehood on August 21st of this year.
  • February 28th, 2009 will be our 50th day on Maui going back to June ’06.
  • Last year, we brought my mom to Maui as a gift for her 50th birthday.
  • There are 60 minutes in an hour, but I probably spend 50 of them wishing I was on Maui. :)

2 More Weeks
Just one more Sunday Photo next week from our existing collection before we’ll be taking all new ones from the Valley Isle.

News: Mixed Emotions on Lahaina bypass

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

About two weeks ago, I shared an article that highlighted upcoming work that was about to begin on the long awaited Lahaina Bypass. That article listed the date for the public meeting that was being held on Dec. 10th to discuss the plans and solicit feedback from the community. The Maui News yesterday posted a follow up article covering reactions from local residents attending that meeting.

The article does a very good job of sharing quotes and concerns from many different residents, and as the title states, with somewhat mixed emotions about what is involved in this project. While you’re obviously never going to be able to please everyone at the same time, I think there’s a good approach being taken here to let people address the Transportation board and have their concerns heard before any work is done.
According to the article, work is still expected to begin this month, and the project is estimated to be completed in two years.

Travel Tradition: Day One

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

A Stroll Down Front StreetLast week’s edition of our Travel Traditions series featured the rituals we follow on our arrival day. I thought I’d continue on that this week by covering some of our favorite things to do on our first full day on Maui each trip.

Our first full day centers around dinner at one our favorites places to eat in Maui, Cheeseburger in Paradise. But that’s not until later in the afternoon, so let me start with the rest of the day first. On this first day, we’re still recovering from the timezone difference between Chicago and Hawaii, so I typically find myself getting up much earlier than I do on the rest of the trip. Our arrival day post talked a little bit about the lanai in our ocean front room at the Sheraton, so I’ll usually make my way out there for a little bit, trying not to wake Cindy.

Early mornings are so peaceful and quiet on Maui. Because we stay in Ka’anapali, which is on the western most part of the island, we don’t get the benefit of watching the sunrise each day. But that’s okay, looking out onto the ocean that first morning after a well needed night’s rest is a personal moment of reflection for me. I’ll take a moment to be thankful for the opportunity to visit such a wonderful place each year, and for all those long hours of hard work and sacrafices we have to endure throughout the year to make these trips happen. One of the few times I’ll actually think about work and things back home while we’re on vacation.

Anyway, here’s a quick clip that was taken on the lanai from one of our earlier trips. It might not seem that exciting, but as I mentioned above, it’s very peaceful.

Once we’re both awake and finished getting ready that morning, we’ll head downstairs to the Keka’a Terrace for their breakfast buffet. A lot of folks mention skipping the resort breakfast buffet as a good way to save money on Hawaii, and their 100% correct. Luckily for us, and depending on what package we book with the Sheraton, we get vouchers for free buffet breakfast every morning. That’s a big plus, since we’ll head down to eat at around 9am or so, have a big breakfast, and skip out on lunch.

Front Street
With breakfast out of the way, we’ll make our way down to Lahaina town around 1pm or so and walk around Front Street to soak up a little of the atmosphere there for awhile. The majority of the places we’ll eat out for dinner are in Lahaina, so we’ll find ourselves there about 5-6 times during a two week trip. The more times we walk along that popular stretch of road, browsing through store windows and some of the general stores, the more we just feel right at home. For a first day tradition, it really gets us back into that “we never left” mode.

Depending on what the day is like, we’ll trek on over to the Banyan tree and check out some of the boats in the harbor. We’ll probably spend about 2-3 hours or so, just walking up and down the shops, seeing what has changed since last year, things like that. We might do a little shopping, and we’ll usually start looking for a new set of Aloha wear for our luau that trip.

Cheeseburger in ParadiseThe First Dinner
Close to about 4pm, we’re starting to get hungry and it’s time for our traditional day one dinner at Cheeseburger in Paradise. We first stumbled across Cheeseburger while in Waikiki for our honeymoon. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and absolutely loved the food. Honestly, any place that has burgers and chicken sandwiches, and lets you add a slice of grilled pineapple to any sandwich is my kind of place. :)

Their motto above the door reads “Paradise Served Daily”, and would tend to think it’s right on. At their Lahaina location, Cheeseburger in Paradase doesn’t have a bad place to sit. With two levels, you can stay on the ground floor and watch the folks stroll along by, but we opt for the second story seating and a view of the water. We’ll be there early enough where there isn’t that long of a wait, but depending on where we sit, that late afternoon sun in the western sky might be a little too strong while you’re trying to eat. Afterall, you are right on the water in Lahaina Harbor, so be sure to say hello to Lana’i out nearby.

Dessert
We’re not that big on dessert while on vacation, although we are very found of the Hula Pie at Leilani’s. After getting back to our resort around 5:30pm or so, we’ll take a stroll over to Whalers Village and endulge in a little Haagen Dazs to celebrate the evening. For me, it’s the pineapple and coconut ice cream, while Cindy will switch off between the while chocolate macadamia nut ice cream and the frozen mocha drink they have (I don’t remember the name).

After a short stroll around Whalers, we’ll take our time heading back to the Sheraton. On nights like this first one, we’ll just catch the final glimpse of the sunset while at Whalers, and with the cliff dive ceremony at Black Rock already completed, we’ll see the torches on Black Rock lit from afar. And when I say we’ll “take our time” heading back, that means we’ll kick off the slippahs and walk along the beach itself rather than the beachwalk that we usually take. By the time we eventually make it back to the Sheraton, we usually have a view looking something like this.

Black Rock at Night

Not a bad way to finish off Day One, eh?

The Travel Traditions Series here at the blog features our habits and rituals that we have for various aspects of our frequent trips to the island of Maui. Getting to know the island so well after all these years, having a few traditions adds a little continuity to our visits, while still giving us so much flexibility to enjoy many new things each trip.

News: Walgreens has arrived in Lahaina

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

The following is an article that appeared online on the Lahaina News website last week.

For those of you that were hearing about the competition between rival drug store chains Walgreens and CVS earlier this year to acquire Longs Drugs (which CVS did), you might remember some of the hoopla that was going on around it. With Walgreens losing out on the big prize, they settled for acquiring a few local pharmacies, include 4 on Maui.
According to the Lahaina News article, the first of those Walgreens-acquired pharmacies was to open its doors under its new name yesterday, in the Old Lahaina Center. The Lahaina Pharmacy, which was owned by Sheldon Zimmerman and who was interviewed in the article, was serving local residents for the past 17 years.  Zimmerman, now 75, talks in the article about his first arrival to Maui some 38 years ago.
Putting the business aspect aside for a moment, I really enjoyed the interview in this article and about how Mr. Zimmerman summarizes all the changes he’s seen to the Lahaina area since 1970, and how happy he was to raise his family there. Hearing him recall a different time for West Maui, before all the shopping centers, resorts, and even the parking on Front Street back then, all stirs up ideas of what it would have been like to see Lahaina back then.
While it didn’t get the attention that the Longs Drugs story did, I think it is a nice story, and felt it was worth sharing. Feel free to share your thoughts.
Mahalo.
