Cloudy Wailuku

Taken by Kris Nelson on June 4th, 2006
Location: Flying over Wailuku, Maui on a Blue Hawaiian Helicopter tour.

This week’s Sunday Photo comes from the skies above Central Maui during our first helicopter tour above the Valley Isle back in 2006. I thought it would be a fitting choice for two reasons.

First, because I’m really excited about my next photo adventure in the sky coming up this Friday. I’m just 6 days away from a doors-off helicopter tour as part of the Maui Photo Festival this week, and one of the big selling points for me to work my butt off this summer to pay for a 2nd trip to Maui this year.

The second reason I thought it was a fitting choice was because, as I’m typing this, I’m currently 32,000 feet somewhere over the Midwest on our way back to Maui. And while I’m writing this on the plane, I’m actually connected to the Internet via the Gogo Inflight Internet Service on American Airlines. Talk about a long time coming, all these years messing around on my laptop during these long flights to and from the islands in the Pacific Ocean, and just now am I able browse the web in the process. The $9.95 price per flight might be a little steep (or not, compared to the price of airfare), but I wanted to give it a shot at least once.

Back to the photo, I always have fun looking at photos of Maui from either a plane or helicopter, trying to identify where above on the island it was taken.  My good old friend Google Maps usually is my first stop, and the map below help in part to solve this particular puzzle.

Following the same process, I was able to identify other neat places in my helicopter photos, such as Wailea in South Maui, the road along Hookipa Beach, cars parked at the Papawai Scenic Lookout, and even a distant shot of Haleakala National Park near the Oheo Gulch.

I can’t wait to go up again and get even more shots of the island we love. Not only do I now have 3 more years worth of photography experience now, I also will be flying with former Air Force aerial photographers. Too cool. Be sure to check back next weekend for the photos, as I’ll try to post them as fast as I can.

Mahalo,
– Kris

This week we’re featuring one last photo from our ’06 helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. Taken somewhere over West Maui on Hwy 30 between Kahului and Lahaina, you can see some of the amazing coral that goes right up to the shoreline. That drive along Hwy 30 has more than its share of amazing views by itself, but little did we know there was even more beauty hiding just below the ocean surface.

Like last week, check out the Maui from Above photoset in our photo gallery if you want to see more photos from this helicopter tour. And also like last week, we’re featuring this photo today on our Maui Photo Day Calendar gadget.

Sunday Photo: Hidden Waterfall

Hidden Waterfal
Hidden Waterfall
Taken by Kris Nelson on June 4, 2006
Location: Somewhere above Maui

Continuing from last week’s photo, here is another shot from high above Maui that we took on our helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. This hidden waterfall is one of the many that you can only see from a helicopter, and surely the vantage point from a helicopter window can’t do justice to the actual size of this towering sight.

I don’t know where exactly we were above Maui when I took this photo, so trying to identify this particular waterfall is rather tricky. We did receive a DVD of our helicopter tour (which was well worth the additional $20), and I’ve been meaning to watch it for the past few weeks now. Maybe that will help put some context to where about this treasure was found, but even if it remains nameless, it’s still amazing!
If you’d like to see more photos from this helicopter tour, you can see them in our Maui from Above photoset in our photo gallery. Also, if you are already using our Maui Photo Day Calendar gadget, you’ll notice that this photo is featured as today’s gem.

Sunday Photo: Wailea from Above

Wailea from Above
Wailea from Above

Location: Above Wailea

The week’s Sunday Photo is from our first trip to Maui, and also from our first helicopter tour. While a good helicopter tour can be one of the most expensive things you can do on your visit to the Valley Isle, we really enjoyed it. We did a 60-minute island tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, and the weather was absolutely perfect.

This photo is looking South along the South Maui coast. Starting at the top of this picture, that big stretch of land sticking out into the ocean is Pu’u Ola’i at Makena State Park. Just on the other side of that is Big Beach. That first small beach just below Pu’u Ola’i in this photo is Maluaka Beach, which we also visited this past April. I’ve added notes for other places seen in this photo, so click on the photo to go to the Flickr page and see the rest.
While we don’t have plans for another helicopter tour during this upcoming trip, I certainly would like to do another one sometime soon. If you’d like to see more photos from this helicopter tour, you can see them in our Maui from Above photoset in our photo gallery.
