The Hawaii State Flag

Friday, January 9th, 2009

I came across a post from HawaiiMagazine.com that I wanted to share. The post itself is actually from this past October, but I found it featured in the magazine’s best posts update early this year.

I had previously known some of the history and meaning behind the flag, such as the Union Jack and the eight stripes for the eight major islands. I didn’t know, however, about the Kanaka Maoli, or Native Hawaiian, flag. The post, while brief, does a good job explaining the background of the state flag, so I’ll let you read that.

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this in the past, but we ourselves are proud owners of a full-sized Hawaii State flag. It might sound odd (at least it did to one of the staff at the Sheraton), but I was really keen on bringing one of these home during our first Maui trip. Little did I realize these weren’t the exciting tourist item that everybody was selling.
We checked everywhere we could think of: almost all the ABC Stores, Whalers Village, Lahaina Cannery Mall, up and down Front Street, and no luck. As a last ditch effort, and seeing the sign along Hwy 30 in Lahaina, we stopped into the Ace Hardware store of all places, and sure enough, I got my flag!
Nowadays, that everlasting reminder of Hawaii is hanging on the wall above my desk in my office at home, as you can see below. Those bottles pictured there are also reminders of our time on Maui, although they have since moved on to a better place. :) Those are bottles of Ocean Vodka, made with water from 1,000 ft below sea level off the shores of Maui. But that’s another post.

One More Hawaii Flag Tip
One thing you may notice while in Hawaii is that some people fly the Hawaii flag upside down, whether on their porch, as bumper stickers, etc. What we were told while seeing this along the Road to Hana is that it is a display by some islanders as a disapproval of tourists. While these aren’t violent or dangerous people, we were warned (half jokingly, I think) to be weary of anyone flying the flag upside down that might be selling food, fruit, or other clever ways to play pranks on unsuspecting tourists.
Rest assured, these represent only a very, very limited number of folks on the islands, usually younger youth looking for something to rebel against. I only mention it because it’s something that you likely wouldn’t notice if you weren’t looking for it.

News: UH Play in Christmas Eve Hawaii Bowl

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Most people have heard by now that the UH Warriors football team will be “bowling” tomorrow, playing in the 7th annual Hawaii Bowl at Aloha Stadium. Here’s a nice article from the Hawaii Today column of the HawaiiMagazine.com website.

College football doesn’t seem like it would be a normal holiday tradition in Hawaii, but then again, maybe it is. You see, of the six previous Hawaii Bowl games, UH has played in 4 of them, and have a record of 3-1 going into tomorrow’s bowl game. Each previous Hawaii Bowl has either been played on Christmas eve or Christmas day, and you can find more details from this Wikipedia article.
As for the Fighting Irish, this is their first trip to Aloha Stadium for the Hawaii Bowl, and it is a welcomed reward after a dismal 6-6 season. Seeing how cold and miserable the weather in the Midwest is right now, and seeing that Cindy and I drove out to visit friends in South Bend last month, we know Notre Dame will at least enjoy the weather.
Of course, the Warriors had bigger dreams last year when they played Georgia in the BCS Sugar Bowl, finishing off a 12-0 season prior to losing to Georgia. Expectations weren’t very high at the start of this season for the team after they lost a pretty strong graduating class of seniors in ’08, as well as their popular head coach.
Catching the Game
If you’d like to add a little football to your holiday fesitivies (and you have cable or satellite), the game will be broadcasted nationally on ESPN and kickoff is at 8pm Eastern, 3pm HST. We’ll be with family tomorrow, but you can be sure that the guys, at least, will be around the TV shortly after dinner.
Go Warriors!

Hawaii Magazine – 25 Hawaiian Words

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

We saw this article and subsequent page in the latest issue of Hawaii Magazine, thought it was pretty neat, and felt it was worth sharing.

The article, How Hawaiian Should Sound, is a list of 25 common Hawaiian words (other than the basics like aloha and mahalo) that everyone in Hawaii, native or not, pretty much knows. There are also sound clips of each of the words so you can actually hear them in addition to learning their definition.

When we read it in the magazine, we were pretty happy that we knew or had at least seen more than half of the words, but hearing on the website was a big help, too.

Enjoy.
