South Maui and Beyond

Wave WatchingTrip Journal Entry for Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011.

Good morning, Maui, Tuesday was our first and only full day of the trip without events for the Maui Photo Festival, so we were determined to make the most of it. So we decided to head south. Way south.

First Things First

We each picked up a few small items for breakfast when we went grocery shopping on Monday, so we didn’t hassle with heading downstairs to eat in the morning. But still, knowing we were heading down south to Kihei for a beach trip, we had one stop to make…Starbucks.

So off to the Cannery it was, and while we were there, we did a little looking for an Aloha shirt for our son, Christian. No such luck on Tuesday, but it was only a matter of time. Before long, we were back on the road and heading south.

Kam III, Finally

Although it was a shorter trip than usual for us, we still wanted to cross a few things off of our trip list. And seeing that our beach tradition had already included Kamaole Beach Parks I and II, it was time we completed the trifecta and hit Kamaole Beach Park III – Kam III, for short.

And to make the day all that sweeter, it was our son’s first trip to the beach and into the ocean all at once. What a lucky child, yah?

First Beach Steps

Christian Splash

Sandy Toes

As one would expect of a nine month old, he wasn’t exactly sure what to think of the situation. With the waves coming at him and that strange new feeling of wet sand under his feet and between his toes. He was only out there for a few minutes – and he won’t remember any of it – but at least we have some adorable photos to show him when he’s older.

The rest of the time, I did my usual beach walk and photo session while he played in the sand with mama and grandma. We were probably there for about 45 minutes before it was time for lunch.

Gotta Have the Plate Lunch

Since we were down in Kihei before – back when we visited Kam I and Kam II on previous trips – we already had been to Da Kitchen for lunch. And since we were nearby once again, we decided to head back that way once again. We were in and out pretty quick, but the food was ono as always. I know there were probably a few other places in the general area that we could have ventured off to and tried, but we had a full day ahead of us still.

Going South, Way South

After we ate, we hoped back on South Kihei Road and get our adventure in the south direction. We weren’t exactly sure when the day started, but by now I had made up my mind that we were heading down to La Perouse Bay -which happens to be the southern most point on Maui. Seeing that we’d been to Wailea and Makena before, I knew the general area already. But once we made our way passed Beach Beach, it turned into what we like to call an adventure. :)

The drive itself wasn’t that tough, since it’s really just a single road so it’s not easy to get lost. Some parts of the road seemed almost impossible to pass, especially in our Nissan Quest, but we made it to the last parking area before the trail to La Perouse Bay.

I’ve seen that bay photographed quite a few times, and it has been on my todo list for sometime now. And unfortunately – as of this writing – it still is. I did do a little research ahead of time, but wasn’t exactly sure just how far the hike was between the lot with the cars and the bay area itself. And with grandma and our son staying behind in the car, Cindy and I started to explore and ultimately ended up about halfway along the trail before we turned around.

Hike to La Perouse Bay

I could have easily spent another hour there at least had we walked the rest of the trail, but since I had the family with us, it would have been a little selfish of me. At least now when it’s time to wander over to that area again – for a sunset or what have you – I know where to go and what to expect. And that counts for something.

Stopping for Shopping

Shops at WaileaSeeing as we were already down in the Wailea / Makena area, and we had to pass it anyway on our drive back north, we soon found ourselves at the Shops at Wailea. While we typically enjoy the outdoor malls back home for a leisurely stroll in the early evening, it was just about peak afternoon this time so the heat was a little challenging. That was quickly remedied by a stop at Lappert’s right there in the mall. A shake, smoothie, and a root beer float, and we were back in business.

The other spot I wanted to hit up while we were coming back through Kihei was the 808 Clothing Store. I had taken a liking to their designs and shirts a few years ago (at the Whale Day Festival, I believe) and we had previously visited their store in Ma’alaea as well. About $100 later, we were leaving with shirts for ourselves, our son, and gifts for folks back home.

That pretty much wrapped up the shopping portion of the day right there, so we were back on the road and on our way to Ka’anapali once again.

Sunset Awaits

After we were back at the Hyatt, it was time to relax and cool off for a little bit after a busy day. Before we knew it, sunset was creeping up on us, and seeing how we hadn’t taken it in on Monday, I wanted to get down to the beachwalk and find me a spot to shoot it.

So I headed down with my camera looking for a little flair to put in the sunset shot. Once I found my spot, I happened to be shooting next to an older gentleman trying to capture the evening glory as well. I offered a few tips that I was using, and after the golden moment, we stayed and chatted for a bit. It was not only great to talk to someone else about photography, but also about the islands and previous trips as well.

But enough stalling, here’s the shot you’re looking for…

Maui Sunset

Just about the time this nice gentleman and I were finished trading email addresses, Cindy came strolling by with our son for our walk over to Whalers Village. It was time to renew yet another one of our travel traditions – jewelry shopping.

And this time, it was with a purpose in mind. We were headed to replace the original toe ring she picked up many years ago on our first trip, which she had to take off last summer while she was pregnant with our son. From what we were told in our early parenthood classes, a pregnant mother’s feet can swell up to a full shoe size during pregnancy, and may not necessarily go back to the previous size after childbirth. Guess you didn’t think you’d be learning something like that in our trip journal here, now did ya? :P

The Night Stroll

Fortunately, Cindy found the toe ring she wanted relatively easily, so we had some extra time to walk around one of our old stomping grounds and see what shops had changed, were new, and so on. After stopping to feed Christian – and tempted by that amazing pizza at Nikki’s – we were starting the stroll back to the Hyatt. It was a little longer walk than we were used to, back when it was just walking in the sand from Whalers to the Sheraton. But it was still a very pleasant night.

And although the night skies were whispering in my ear to come back and join them for a second straight night, I thought better of it and decided to call it a night. After all, it was a pretty full day as far as vacation standards go.

Wednesday Ahead

Looking ahead to Wednesday, it was the official start of the Maui Photo Festival with the evening opening ceremonies. Seeing as we put in quite a few miles by the end of Tuesday, Wednesday was looking to have a much more laid back feel to it. And for good reason, since once the workshops started, I’d be going full speed until Sunday morning.

More details on that in our next trip journal entry.

The Baby Has Landed

Kihei from AboveTrip Journal Entry for Monday, August 22nd, 2011.

It took two years, but after one long travel day, the Nelsons had returned to Maui!

The day started only hours after the night ended, as we were up at around 2:30am to get ready for a 6:30am flight from Chicago. We knew traveling with our 9 month old son for the first time was going to be challenging, so starting that early in the morning didn’t seem like it would be of any help.

Morning Travel

We usually fly United Airlines to Maui so we can upgrade to Economy Plus and get the extra legroom on those long flights. This time, they were offering something they called Premier Travel, which included the Economy Plus seating, priority boarding and security line access, and covered our first 2 checked bag fees. Since we were already planning to go with Economy Plus seating and were each checking a bag, it seemed like a good idea to get the priority security line access and boarding.

Well, a few things came into play that I hadn’t previously considered. First, we were flying out of O’Hare airport first thing Monday morning. So even with the priority security line access, we still had to contend with the massive amount of weekly business travelers that also had the same access. It was still probably faster than the regular security line, but it was a little bit of a shock when we arrived (so early) at the airport.

The second was that since we were traveling with a child under 4 years old, that automatically gave us priority boarding according to United’s policies. Still, covering the Economy Plus upgrades and the checked bags round trip seemed to be worth it (although I haven’t done to math to confirm).

The flights themselves – one to LAX and then from there to Kahului – went surprisingly well. We were a little apprehensive to find out how well Christian would be taking to air travel with such a pair of long flights for his maiden voyage to Maui, but he handled it better than we had hoped. There were a few moments when it seemed like he’d go completely nuts, but with my wife and my mom there to help, the situations were diffused quickly. Thank goodness.

Hertz Hurts

Once we finally landed in Maui, it was off to our usual car rental choice on the island – Hertz. Again, I was trying to get a leg up on the long lines and other visitors, so when I made our reservation online, I joined their Gold Club member program which was supposed to expedite getting our car and send us on our way. Well, it turns out the reservation didn’t have our designation on it, so the car wasn’t ready and our name wasn’t on the magic board when we arrived.

No problem, I thought, since there was a separate line in the facility for Gold Club members, so I assumed we’d still get out of there faster. Well, the separate line was shorter, but although they had 4 terminals at the counter, there was only 2 attendants helping us in the “preferred” line. And one, plus the manager, was occupied with somewhat of an uncooperative and uneducated customer. The type of customer that needs to be told the exact same thing by 3 different employees, and then when the next person comes to help them, they act ignorant and try to start the entire process from scratch. So frustrating to watch.

Once we finally got through the line, we were off to our car. The vehicle – a Nissan Quest – was large enough for what we reserved, so that was good. The car seat we requested, however, was not installed in the vehicle yet, and we were left to figure it out for ourselves. That was some unneeded aggravation that none of us were up for at that moment. They did manage to redeem themselves somewhat when we returned the vehicle, but we’ll save that for later in the trip journal.

Arrival Day Routine

By the time we were on the road, things were good. Knowing how to leave the airport and get to the main highway to Lahaina without GPS or a map is always a proud moment for us. :)

We made it to the Lahaina Cannery Mall before we checked into the hotel, and stopped for dinner and grocery shopping at Safeway. It was an early dinner, since we were scheduled to land at around 1:30pm and we actually landed about 15 minutes early. We ended up at Lulu’s right there at the Cannery, and then it was off to the Hyatt.

Check-in

Checking in at the Hyatt was painless as always. The gentleman that helped us with our bags – and there were a lot of them – was a little hard to understand but was nice to talk to. Unlike our last stay, this time we booked the room through the Maui Photo Festival discount rate, so we were a little unsure what to expect. Last time, we booked kinda last minute and ended up paying full price, but in returned received a gorgeous – and I mean gorgeous – corner room on the 20th floor of the Atrium Tower.

This time, however, we ended up with a partial ocean view room in the Lahaina Tower, which was kind of a let down. Still, you’re in Maui, right? How bad can it really be?

The Night Continues

While everyone else was mostly exhausted, including our son, I was still relishing in the fact that I was back on Maui once again. And at around 7:30pm – which felt like 12:30am Chicago time – I made the decision to grab my tripod, pick up a beach towel, and make the long trek from the Hyatt down to the Sheraton to shoot the torches at Black Rock and the stars above. Much like I did back on our trip in ’07 and has been one of our travel traditions.

After making the walk carrying all my camera gear, I must have been out there for at least an hour letting it all soak in while taking those long exposure night photographs. I still have a few more to go through still, but here are a few that have already made it out of the camera by now.

Black Rock at Night

Stars over Black Rock

Maui Stars

As always, it was a great experience being out there at night without another soul to speak of. Although, I do missing staying right there at the Sheraton and not having to lug all my stuff back down South to the Hyatt. At the end of the night, it was still worth it.

The Day Ahead

With our travel day in the books, it was time to rest up for our first full day of the trip. The plan for Tuesday included a trip down to South Maui for some beach time, lunch, a little shopping and a little exploration. Stay tuned for all the details in our next journal entry.

Back from Maui

Flora at the BeachHard to believe we’re already back from our Maui trip last week. It goes without saying that it went by way too fast.

It also goes without saying that it was a really great time. Our son took to the island – and flying, for that matter – like a real champ, and the Maui Photo Festival was another awesome event this year. It was just as great to finally meet Sheila and Andy from Go Visit Hawaii in person for the first time. They’re actually still on Maui right now, so we’re super jealous, but know they’re having a great time.

Journal Entries Coming Soon

I have lots of notes and photos to share in our trip journal coming soon, which I hope to get going on shortly while everything is still fresh in our minds. We had a few days to ourselves before the workshops started, and there are so many highlights that it’s going to take a few posts to capture it all.

In the meantime, you can follow along with my Maui by Photo page on Facebook, as well as my photography Facebook page, too.

Aloha for now,
– Kris

More Trip 6 Plans

Valley WaterfallLess than one week to go!!!

Last week I started sharing some of our overall plans for the week in paradise, and by now there’s a little more news to share. First up and as promised, a full rundown of the workshop sessions I’m planning on taking at the Maui Photo Festival and Workshops this time next week. It’s going to be a busy few days once the festival starts, but it’s going to all going to be worth it.

The Send Off

As with last time, our good friend Liza from A Maui Blog has set up a little gathering of friends on our last day of the trip to get together, talk story, and say Aloha to our new addition. The plans are for just a simple gathering just before sunset in Kihei, but in a fun little twist it’s the same location that we met IRL for the first time way back in February ’09. The last day of our trips are always bittersweet, but so far, we haven’t found a higher note to end them on as meeting with our Maui friends.

Trip 6 – The Social Visit

Early Morning HyattWhat, we leave for Maui in two weeks? Holy crap!

That’s tongue-in-cheek, of course, no doubt we’re very excited to be going back to the island that we love for the first time in almost 2 years. What’s snuck up on us is just how fast things as a new ‘ohana are racing by and how that first early morning flight will be here before we know it.

The Good News

The good news – or bad news, if you wish – is that this trip is shorter than our previous 2-week adventures, so there isn’t too much else needed to plan. We arrive Monday, so we have Monday night, all day Tuesday, and most of the day Wednesday to ourselves. Wednesday night starts the opening of the Maui Photo Festival and Workshops, and that runs all the way through to Sunday morning. Sadly, we leave on a late flight that night on Sunday.

So, what to do with what equates to just under 48 hours of free time on Maui before the workshops start? Well, we land mid-afternoon on Monday, so no doubt they’ll be a stop at Costco before heading to the Hyatt. Since we’re travelling with keiki this trip, we’re renting a larger vehicle than we’ve driven previously, so that means more space for groceries and supplies (aka baby stuff). We’ll see how travel day treats us as to where we end up for dinner that night.

Getting Social

Tuesday being our free day – or at least mine, anyway – we’re thinking of heading down to Kihei and catch up with a few friends that we might not be able to meet up with on Sunday before we leave. We’re tentatively entertaining the idea of two gathers with friends on Tuesday and then on Sunday, but now’s really the time to kick that into high gear.

Personally, I’d also love to cross off La Perouse Bay off of my wish list for shooting photos while we’re down there, but I don’t know how realistic that would be with the entire family. If not, we may end up walking the Wailea Boardwalk during sunset again if we’re still down that far.

Wednesday will likely be our Lahaina day, as we drop in on Front Street and checkout what has changed (or hasn’t) since our last visit in ’09. Given all the early evening walks we’ve been taking with our son in his stroller this summer, we should be right in our usual rhythm (praying my mom’s knees can hold up, though). And as mentioned, we’ll be back at the Hyatt Wednesday night for opening ceremony and presentation of the photo workshops, so that’s when we’ll start to see some of the familiar faces from the ’09 event.

The Workshop Schedule

Don't Tell MomWhile the official workshop schedule is already available, I haven’t gone through it thoroughly enough yet to know what I am going to be attending (aside from the helicopter tour, of course). I actually have a business trip next week and before we leave for Maui, so I downloaded the schedule to my iPad and plan on spending some flight time reading through and picking my selections. I’ll have a follow up post on that, too, over on my photography blog.

One of the things I’m really excited about this year is how much I’ve progressed and learned since the last session I attended back in ’09. That, plus the recent shift to shooting portraits (thanks to our son), means I’ll be looking into different sessions than last time. No fear, mind you, I can’t easily give up my original passion of shooting gorgeous landscapes of Maui, so there will be plenty of that, too.

More to Come

Although it’s really starting to take a last-minute feel to it, I’ll probably have a few more things to share before we leave. Primarily they’ll be around meetups with friends from last trip and even some we’ll get to meet IRL for the first time – most notably the great folks Sheila and Andy from Go Visit Hawaii.

And last, but not least, our son Christian gets to make his Maui debut and meet all his Maui fans from Facebook that can’t wait to see him up close and personal. Who knows, some of them might even be his future babysitters. *wink* *wink*

Well, that’s all for now. Aloha!

– Kris
