Maui Anniversary

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Five years ago today, our lives changed for ever. It was the first day of our very first Maui trip, and after witnessing views like the one below, our lives were never the same.

That’s why, on this day, I was happy to feature my first Maui photo as the Daily Maui Photo today. And that’s also why we’re excited to be going back in three months.

Life Changing, Really?

Yes, really. It may sound over dramatic, but if we think of how much of our lives have been shaped by that first Maui visit, it’s actually pretty true. I could seriously go on and on, but here’s a short list.

  • I bought my first DSLR camera to take photos during that first trip. While I was just starting, it turned into a larger hobby than I had imagined. Now, I have 3 DSLR camera bodies, a half-dozen lenses, and a bagful of other gadgets to play with.
  • While preparing for our second Maui trip in ’07, I created the Ka’anapali Dreamin’ website and blog as part of a website design course I was taking at the time. Now, almost 350 posts and 4 years strong, it’s one of my largest websites in terms of content and even traffic.
  • Our 3rd Maui trip was in ’08, and for that trip, I dabbled around with a Maui Twitter experiment and shared updates from Maui live view my primary Twitter account at the time. Now I operate two other Twitter handles as well: @MauiByPhoto and @DailyMauiPhoto.
  • In that same ’08 trip, we brought my mom along to celebrate her 50th birthday earlier in the year. What better gift could you give your mom for her 50th birthday than a trip to Maui?
  • The following year, we attended our first #MauiTweetup and met in person some of the great Maui pals I had been tweeting with for the previous year or so. We had another meet up that trip, and later that year, we met with an even larger crowd. Without Maui and Twitter, these are friends we would have never met otherwise.
  • Skip ahead a few other items, and come to this last December when our first child was born. We even chose to give him a Hawaiian middle name. :)

So yeah, one could say life would have been a little different had we’d not taken that first trip to Maui. Not a day goes by where we’re not looking at photos of Maui, talking story with friends online, wearing jewelry from Maui, well, you get the idea.

So much has happened in the five years since that first day we spent on Maui, and who knows where we’ll be five years from now. We know where we want to be, that’s for sure. ;)

#MauiSunset Catalogue – Beta

Maui SunsetAloha Maui sunset fans!

In a post last month, I mentioned a little project I was starting with the #MauiSunset Flickr Group. Well, about two weeks ago I kicked off a beta version of the #MauiSunset Catalogue over at the Daily Maui Photo website. This new page allows you to click back in time and view sunset photos from earlier this year, and years past.

It’s still an early beta, as there are many, many other features I’m looking to add this summer. The navigation is simple to use, but I’d still like to enhance it a little bit in the coming months, too. But for now, I think it does a pretty decent job of achieving the simple goal of showing Maui sunsets day by day, er, rather night by night. ;)

The Numbers So Far

At the start of this week, we’ve already collected over 100 photos and 23 members in our #MauiSunset Flickr Group, which isn’t bad for just about 8 weeks time. As part of those photos, we have 46 photos from this past March, and 15 photos already for April. If you’d like to help out, even if you have photos from previous years, take a look at this post and scroll about 1/3 down for the details.

As with everything else, if you have any suggestions or comments, please let me know.

New eBook – Maui by Poster

Monday, April 25th, 2011

Aloha, I hope you all had a nice weekend.

If you’re looking to get back into a nice Maui headspace while starting another workweek, why not check out the recently released Maui by Poster eBook.

Officially released last Friday, this eBook features 24 of my Maui images transformed into a series of posters that I created on the iPad. You can view a few sample images on the download page, and I also plan to feature them with a few posts here on the Ka’anapali Dreamin’ blog.

It is my first eBook, and I have ideas a for a few more. That said, if you have any feedback, suggestions, or run into any problems viewing the eBook, please let me know so I can help resolve those in the future.

Mahalo, and enjoy,
– Kris

Iao Needle on Google Street View

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

When I first read that Google Street View cars were spotted Hawaii back in April ’09 (reported on by Hawaii Blog) I was pretty excited. The thought of virtually cruising up and down Front Street or some of the roads near tough to spot beaches was neat, especially being 4,200 miles away.

It wasn’t until seven months later that the service actually went online for the Aloha State, and I can only imagine it’s been getting better ever since.

Fast Forward

0305 - Mar 5thFast forward to last night, when I was looking at the Daily Maui Photo for Saturday, which is an aerial shot of the Iao Valley State Park I took during the Maui Photo Festival that year. The aerial shot led me to drill into the satellite imagery on Google Maps to find out how far we had hiked when I took my Iao Valley Stream photo on our previous trip.

In the process of viewing the satellite imagery on Google Maps, the little Street View guy was there staring at me, so I said what the heck and gave it a shot. And here’s what I found.

Pretty cool, if you ask me. Now, the next time someone asks me on Twitter at @DailyMauiPhoto about any of my Iao Valley photos, I can point them to here as well. People can actually “drive” up to the parking lot of the state park without having to leave their living room (or if their on vacation, their hotel room).

And aside from the cool factor, it looks like they Street View team had much better weather than we did when we were last at the Iao Valley State Park. Here’s my closest shot to the view above from that trip:

The blue skies from the Google car make for a much better image, don’t you think? Not bad for a series of cameras bolted onto the roof of car, if you ask me.

Where Else Has Google Been?

I haven’t made it a point yet to check out other popular – or lesser known – spots on the island to see what Google has covered yet, but I’ll try to make a point to, soon. If you do give it and find something good, please share in the comments as I’d love to check it out.

Spreading Aloha on Twitter

Friday, February 18th, 2011

0218 - Feb 18thHappy Aloha Friday everyone!

How would you like to spread a little Aloha on Twitter to all of your followers each day? Sounds interesting? Then please read on.

Last month, I announced my latest Maui online destination, the Daily Maui Photo website. Along with the website, I am also getting back into my ol’ Twitter ways and engaging with Maui fans via @DailyMauiPhoto on Twitter. Part of my Twitter account features an auto-published daily Maui photo from the website.

Now, with a little setup, you, too, can auto-publish the same daily photo straight to your followers each day. And who wouldn’t like a little Aloha in their day?

Publishing Daily Maui Photos on Twitter

The good news is, setting up publishing of these photos is super easy. You can find more details on the Twitter page over at Daily Maui Photo. And if you’d like step-by-step instructions on how to set this up, I have those, too (on my web development blog). If you’re already a Twitter pro or use a different service that I do in my instructions, you can easily use that as well.

If you do happen to give this a shot, please let me know (either here or on Twitter) and I’d be happy to add your tweets to the list you see there on the Twitter page. Also, I have a few other content sharing changes in the works, too, so if you’re setting this up now, I’d like to let you know when those are ready.

If you have any questions, run into any problems, or have other suggestions, please don’t hesitate in letting me know. And if you have friends or other contacts out there that would be interested in sharing these photos, by all means pass this post on. The more Aloha from Maui out there, the better!

Mahalo,
– Kris
