Cliff Dive Warrior

Taken by Kris Nelson on September 17, 2007
Location: Black Rock, Ka’anapali

I stumbled across this photo from my archives while selecting photos for my new website (which I’m hoping to launch on Monday). The Black Rock Cliff Dive is certainly one of our favorite things to see while when we stay at the Sheraton, and in fact, it was a tough call whether it was my one favorite at this Facebook thread. Anyway, I was amazed with the detail in the lit torch, and even though the rest of the photo is mostly underexposed (aka dark), I chose it anyway. :)

This last week has been pretty busy with work on my new site, but I do have a few things I’ve been meaning to post here as well (which should have been up yesterday).  Be sure to stay tuned Monday for some of the news.

Mahalo.

Sunday Photo: Inside the Lava Tube

Inside the Lava Tube

Taken by Kris Nelson on April 15th, 2008
Location: Waianapanapa State Park in East Maui

If I close my eyes and drown out all the noise around me, I can still hear the roaring sounds the waves at Waianapanapa State Park made as they violently crashed into the shore.  Then, as the last wave recedes, the sizzle of the water filtering back through the below my feet fills the entire lava tube, as if I was surrounded by hundreds of rattlesnakes.  Before long, the next wave crashes into the rocks just as hard as the last, and the cycle repeats again.

Rewind a few hundred years, and these very same lava tubes were used by women and children to provide shelter during times of war. And then, there are legends like that of Princess Popoalaea, who had been said to have used this cave to hide from her cruel husband, Chief Kakae. The story is captured in a nearby sign.

Legend of Waianapanapa Caves

Further Back in Time
Rewind back millions of years, when the islands were still being formed.  There was no one around to witness it, but rivers of lava were flowing freely around open cracks in the still hardening earth. Processes similar to those conditions constructed these tubes over time, leaving not just scars in the beautiful Hawaii landscapes, but direct connections to an ancient period. A time machine if you will.

Back to the near future, closer to the next time you get to walk through one of these geological gems. When you hear those waves crashing near the shore, and the rocks sizzling beneath your feet. Close your eyes, and drown out the sounds of the kids playing tag and climbing the rocks nearby. Picture what it would have been like to have seen your surroundings just a few hundred years ago. Wouldn’t look too much differently, would it?

Sunday Photo: West Maui Sunset

Sunday, June 7, 2009

West Maui Sunset

Taken by Kris Nelson on February 17th, 2009
Location: Private lanai at the Sheraton Maui Resort, Ka’anapali

I was looking through the past editions of our Sunday Photo Series and noticed that I haven’t featured a beautiful Maui sunset in quite a long time.  In fact, the last one was posted all the way back in September! I guess we’ve had a lot of other great things to share if we’ve gone that long here without featuring one of these beauties.

This photo was taken on our most recent trip to Maui and the day after we witnessed our first Haleakala sunrise. I guess maybe the Maui sunsets were getting a little jealous that their early early morning cousins were getting all our attention this trip, so it decided to puff up its chest and spread out its peacock feathers in all its glory. And I must say, while it’s not the most fiery and golden sunset we’ve seen on Maui, the blue skies added their own dramatic feel to the mix. The result was one of the best sunsets we’ve seen in our relatively short time on the islands.

I have already received a few compliments on this photo, but to be brutally honest, I’m not 100% happy with how it came out. When I see this photo, I still recall the anguish I was going through as I snapped away with photo after photo. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful image and certainly worthy enough of being shared with all of you. My angst at the time was that I couldn’t capture the actual beauty of the scene exactly the way I was experiencing it (which happens a lot on Maui, actually).  To put it another way, I took about a dozen shots at this scene with various exposure settings, came away with this one as the best of the bunch, and in my opinion, it’s still probably only half as spectacular as it was in person. What does that tell you about these magical Maui sunsets, eh?

Our Lanai at the SheratonTalk Story
Since we’re back on the topic of Maui sunsets, a very popular one I might add, I thought I’d pose the question to everyone: Where is your favorite place to watch the sunset on Maui? I realize that’s a pretty tough question, but we’d love to hear your thoughts.

Not to introduce any bias of our own (cough, West Maui, cough), but I mentioned the above photo was taken from our private lanai of our room at the Sheraton Maui Resort. I only say that because as much as fun as it is to share a gorgeous sunset with a beach-full of strangers or with a handful of nearby tables at your favorite ocean view restaurant, there’s a lot that can be said when you and yours are able to bask in the beauty of one of these moments in private. It is definitely one of those moments where you feel like the only two people on the island, and that the sun is putting on this amazing show just for you.

Your turn, tell us your favorites, and don’t be afraid to link to some Maui sunset eye candy as well.

Mahalo,
- Kris

My First Maui Photo

Taken by Kris Nelson on May 30th, 2006
Location: Sheraton Maui Resort, Ka’anapali

It’s really hard to believe that it was only 3 years ago yesterday that we set foot on the island of Maui for the very first time. It feels like we’ve had the Aloha Spirit and the magic of the Valley Isle in our hearts for so much longer than that, but alas the calendar doesn’t lie.

For our “Maui Anniversary”, as @Ucsmiles put it, I decided to hunt down and post the very first photo I ever took on Maui for our Sunday Photo this week. So, here it is. It may not be exuding Maui like a beautiful waterfall or a sandy beach would, but for Cindy and I, the view in this picture sparks the recollection of so many great moments and wonderful memories that keep us longing to return to our favorite island paradise. It’s the view from our lanai at the Sheraton on the very first evening of the very first day of the rest of our Maui-enriched lives.

The Story Behind the Photo
I’ve probably told parts of this story here and there through various blog posts in the past year and a half, but since I’m sharing this particular photo this week, I decided to throw it out there again in it’s entirety.

It was back in the early part of 2006, and we were planning and budgeting every nickel and dime we could afford to get us to Maui. At the time, we had no idea we were about to fall head-over-heels in love with Maui, and that it would change our lives forever. Cindy’s aunt and uncle were seasoned veterans with this heaven on Earth, and their own location of choice was the Royal Lahaina Resort just north of Black Rock in Ka’anapali. They were the ones that scoped out the Sheraton, among many others in the area, and made the recommendation that “this was the place for us.”

Hale O Ka Moana SignSo it had been decided, the Sheraton it was. We made the reservations, and opted for the ocean front rooms in what we later found out to be called the “Hale O Ka Moana” building. With Hale, meaning ‘house’ and Moana, meaning ‘ocean’, you knew these views had to be good. Admittedly, we never did a lot of research into the grounds of the Sheraton prior to our trip, or about the Ka’anapali area as a whole. We didn’t know what Black Rock was, or about the cliff diving ceremony. We’d heard Cindy’s aunt and uncle talk about the walking path along the beach, but we weren’t expecting to find Whalers Village so close and to be such a great place to shop.

After all, it was only our second true vacation as husband and wife, so I never really thought to look into those types of things.

Our Arrival
So, after things were booked and the countdown to our vacation was over, we were on our way. I’d like to say that the direct flight to Kahului from Chicago just flew by, but those who have made similar flights know that’s just not the case. We were a little worn out from travelling all day, but that feeling didn’t last much longer. As soon as we started our final approach to the airport, the first visions of palm trees, those amazing mountains, and the sparkling ocean came into view through that little window. That was just the small start of a turnaround in our spirits that latest the rest of the evening.

We made our way off the plane, got our bags, and waited for the shuttle to take us to the car rental area. Feeling the trade winds rush by and watching all the palm trees sway above us around the airport parking area was the next part of magic that started infecting our spirits. We had a bit of a wait at the rental counter, but that didn’t dampen our mood at that point. With some sketchy directions from the nice man behind the counter, we had our car keys and a map and were on the road.

The First Drive
Papawai LookoutWe’re veterans now of that drive from Kahului to Ka’anapali along Hwy 30, but I still remember the feeling of awe we had that first drive. The winding roads heading west towards Ma’alaea, those amazing views, the tunnel, seeing cars parked at the Papawai lookout, the view of the West Maui mountains towering into the sky right in front of you. It was starting to get to us, we couldn’t believe what we were seeing. After what had become a long and taxing travel day started to feel like a dream. Maybe it wasn’t real and we had dozed off on the plane and we really were just dreaming.

Closer to Lahaina, and even passed town, there are parts of Hwy 30 that literally go right up to the ocean. There are concrete dividers, much like those used in highway construction back home, that do their best to keep the water from the roads, but that’s really it. When we were passing those areas for the first time, we couldn’t believe our eyes. I, being focused on the road, was listening to Cindy’s cries of disbelief of what she was seeing, and I was hearing emotions in her voice that rivaled those of our wedding day.

Aloha, Sheraton
Path to Scenic LookoutWe made it to the Sheraton Maui Resort on the first try without getting lost (which is rare for me). As we pulled up to the front lobby for check-in, we were greeted with fresh flower leis that were so beautiful we wish we could have kept them forever. While we checked in, the bell hop took care of our bags by loading them up on a golf cart. We hadn’t thought much about it at the time, but it was because the Hale O Ka Moana building is actually on the other side of Black Rock. That meant driving to the back of the resort, to where we followed this nice fellow in the golf cart.

The bell hop unloaded our bags onto the luggage cart while we parked the car, and he led us up to our room. By know, we were just about speechless because we were starting to see some of the greenery and flowers around this part of the Sheraton for the first time. No kids running around, no crowds, everything was just so peaceful.

The Moment
Our LanaiWe get to our room and the bell hop opens the door for us. The first thing we see is a view like the one to the right. The bright sunshine rushing through the curtains, the top of a giant palm tree, two chairs on the lanai, and nothing else but clear, blue ocean. That was pretty much it for us as far as holding back our emotions.

We raced towards the lanai while the kind bell hop started unloading the luggage cart and putting the bags on the bed for us. I think both of us completely forgot he was there, which I’m sure was a reaction he and the other staff got a lot from first time guests like ourselves. That first deep breath of the ocean air from our lanai was more intoxicating than the best Mai Tai’s on the island.

I turned around just in time to see that the bell hop was almost done, so I came back inside to give him his tip. He tried giving me directions on how to walk back to the lobby from this side of the resort, which I was barely able to focus on, and then he was off on his way. By the time I made it back on the lanai to rejoin Cindy, it was too late. Her eyes were welling up, so mine started right along with hers. We couldn’t believe how beautiful everything was, and that we had come so far that day, and in our lives, to be witnessing this magic for ourselves.

The Photo
So, after we had a moment to collect ourselves, it was time to freshen up after that long day of travelling, and to go find something to eat. Part of me thought a good, cool splash of water on the face might have awaken any bit of disbelief we might have been experiencing at that moment, but it was all real. While Cindy was getting ready, that’s when I tore open my luggage to get to my camera. I snapped what would end up being my first Maui photo ever, and although it’s not going to be hanging in any galleries anytime soon, it has all that special meaning for us as being the start of a beautiful love affair with Maui.

Talk Story
So that’s it, the story behind this photo. Our lives, much like the ones of many others before us and since then, were forever changed by the experiences of that first trip to Maui. Each time we arrive at Kahului airport, there is that sense of magic, but it’s never going to equal that feeling we had on our first trip.

Do you remember your reactions when visiting Maui for the first time? Silly question, I guess. Well, share them with us, as we know we’re not the only ones that have been struck hard by the magic of Maui over the years, and we’d love to hear your stories, too.

Mahalo,
- Kris

Vacation Portrait

Taken by Natalie Brown – www.nataliebrownphotography.com on Feb. 20th, 2009
Location: Keawakapu Beach, South Maui
Posted here with written permission from Natalie Brown

As mentioned last week, Cindy and I just received the DVD of all of the photos from our amazing vacation portrait session with island photographer Natalie Brown (www.nataliebrownphotography.com) back in February. Having our portraits taken on the most beautiful island in the world was such a magical idea, and have given us some of the greatest keepsakes from our Maui trips that we’ll probably ever have.

I’ll be writing more later this week about how this idea came about and why it’s such a great idea to look into if you love the islands as much as we do and you want to bring home such a personalized memento. In the meantime, you can check out more of our portraits in our Photo Gallery or view them as a Flickr Slideshow.

Hamoa Beach

Taken by Kris Nelson on February 23rd, 2009
Location: Hamoa Beach, East Maui

Another weekend has passed, and I’m inching along through sorting and uploading photos from our more recent Maui trip.  Most recently, I managed to get a few photos from Hana Bay and a few from Hamoa Beach like the one pictured above. It’s photos like this that make me miss Maui the most. It just looks so serene and peaceful. Ahhhh.

Anyway, I hope to have a special treat for next Sunday, as I ordered the full DVD of photos from our vacation portrait session with island photographer Natalie Brown. I’m anticipating it to arrive sometime this week, and will pick a few to feature next Sunday. I’m also planning on having some our favorites available as a slideshow and yet another post on Natalie’s great work and how choosing to have professional portraits taken while vacationing in paradise was such a wonderful idea for us.

Stay tuned for that, and have a nice week.

Luau Fire Dancer

Taken by Kris Nelson on February 26, 2009
Location: Ka’anapali Sunset Luau, Sheraton Maui Resort

I’m turning up the heat a little bit with this week’s Sunday Photo. This shot was taken at the luau at the Sheraton Maui Resort during the second week of our trip last February. Although the weather forced the rest of the luau indoors, we were still treated to the fiery finale outside in the upstairs courtyard. Regardless of the weather, the luau was still lovely, and just another part of our travel traditions each year.

From a photography standpoint, this is the type of shot I really prepare for; doing researching, looking at samples, and a little bit of trial and error. Much like shooting the whales out on the water, there isn’t much you can do to practice for this type of shot (unless you know someone you plays with fire for a living). For all the anticipation and effort, I’m pretty happy with the end result.

A Small Bonus
As I put this post together, I’m listening to the latest release from the newest Maui-born artist in my Hawaiian music collection, Anuhea. It was @jalove that tipped me off to this CD with a post on Twitter. After firing up iTunes and listening to a few of the samples there, Anuhea just sold herself another copy of this self-titled record. :)

It’s not the type of Hawaiian music that fits into the same categories as HAPA or IZ, iTunes files it under R&B/Soul for what that’s worth. It does, however, have a subtle island feel to it that you might only pick up on if you’re a fan of Hawaii (hence reading this blog) and take a peek at her bio at Amazon.com. Some compare her music to that of Colbie Caillat, but I like to think each artist has his/her own sound and urge you to take a listen for yourself. You can also track what others on Twitter are saying about Anuhea here.

Head over to iTunes or Amazon (click the cover image above) to listen to samples, and if you like what you hear, be sure to grab a copy. Not into digital music yet? Shoot over to MELE.COM to order a CD and also check out some other Hawaiian artists while you’re there.

Mahalo,
- Kris

Sunday Photo: Tall Palm Trees

Tall Palm Trees

Taken by Kris Nelson on February 22nd, 2009
Location: Kama’ole Beach Park II, Kihei

Sure, you see these palm trees and blue sky photos all over the place from postcards to guide books and travel brochures. But for whatever reason, I still like capturing them all over the island, from practically every beach we’ve visited over the years.

This one was taken on our beach hopping day last February, at our first stop that afternoon. Kama’ole Beach Park II is one of three beach parks that together make up Kama’ole Beach.  Numbered I, II, and III, we visited Kama’ole Beach Park I last year, and had just as perfect weather as we did this time around.

Beach Park III is still further south of where we stopped this time, and of the three, it is the most popular with the locals. Not only does it have a nice stretch of sand like the other two, it has a large lawn and park area, volleyball nets, and a picnic/pavilion area ideal for large group gatherings.

It wasn’t until last year’s trip did we really start venturing down towards South Maui to go beach hopping. Since then, it has become a favorite place to go hunting for new beaches to visit, which as you know is one of our travel traditions each year.

Talk Story
Is any of your favorite beaches in South Maui?  I still have some work to do in updating our Beaches section here on the site, but until then, feel free to share your favorite South Maui beaches with us.

Mahalo.

Sunday Photo: Maui Roller Hockey

Sunday, April 26, 2009

Maui Roller Hockey

Taken by Kris Nelson on February 21st, 2009
Location: South Kihei at the 2009 Whale Day Parade

Okay, so this picture doesn’t exactly scream Maui as much as the previous photos in the Sunday Photo series, but it is from the Valley Isle. As mentioned above, it was taken at the 2009 Whale Day Parade back in February, and this particular float is for the Maui Inline Hockey Association, which plays right there at Kalama Park in Kihei.

So, why feature a hockey parade float as my Maui Sunday Photo?  Why not? First of all, I’ve played hockey my entire youth life, and just recently started getting back out on the ice. Second, I was very excited when Liza at A Maui Blog let me know about this Maui hockey group, which I shared on the blog here back in January. I really wanted to go check it out on our last trip and watch one of their games while we were in town, but we hit a snag with traffic the night we tried.

Personally, I think it’s cool that these kids (and adults) get to enjoy the game of hockey all the way out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Plus, it’s a sanctioned organization under USA Hockey, which is the national governing body for youth hockey, both ice and inline. That gives them the same support and recognition as hockey groups back on the mainland, too.

Hockey would certainly be something I would miss on a seemingly eventual (if at least only temporary) relocation to Maui, so knowing that there’s a place out there for me to lace up the skates, and maybe even help instruct or coach (like I’ve done in the past) makes living on Maui an even sweeter deal.

Talk Story
So, what do you think? Did you know there was hockey being played on the Valley Isle?  Maybe you’ve seen a game or know someone who’s involved in the program. Share some of you stories (and maybe even some photos) if you have them.

Mahalo.

Royal Lahaina Resort

Taken by Kris Nelson on February 18th, 2009
Location: Royal Lahaina Resort, Ka’anapali, Maui

Aloha and e komo mai to another edition of our Sunday Photo Series. This week’s photo is of the Royal Lahaina Resort and was taken along the beachwalk path that goes through the resorts north of Black Rock in Ka’anapali. I shared an article about this renovated path last November, so of course we had to check it out for ourselves.

It certainly was a gorgeous morning for a walk, with the sun bright in the sky and only small patches of clouds here and there. We had a lovely walk as well, although we were sort of in a hurry because we had our first of two whalewatches scheduled for that morning as well. We had meant to make a return visit to the beachwalk later in our trip, but ultimately ran out of time.

Another visit to this part of the beachwalk is definitely on the list for our next trip, in addition to the existing path that goes from Sheraton to the Hyatt. We also discovered the Wailea boardwalk on our last trip as well, which was incredibly lovely at sunset.

Talk Story
How about you? Do you have a favorite walking path on Maui?

East Maui Sunrise

Taken by Kris Nelson on February 24th, 2009
Location: Hotel Hana-Maui, East Maui

Aloha and Happy Easter everyone. For the Sunday Photo on this special holiday, I figured a shot of sunrise would be the most fitting. This was taken on our last trip to Maui during our stay in Hana (which I really, really miss). Everything was so quiet and peaceful this early in the morning, and even though the cloud cover overtook most of the sky, the sun still managed to make an appearance.

I hope those of you that celebrate Easter have a lovely day with your friends and family today. And if you’re a fan of the cottontail variety this time of year, our own bunnies have a little holiday wish for you, too.

Mahalo,

Sunday Photo: Iao Stream

Sunday, April 5, 2009

Iao Stream

Taken by Kris Nelson on February 20th, 2009
Location: Iao Valley State Park, Maui

Of all of my photos from our last trip that I’ve been able to sit down and go through (about half so far), this is my absolute favorite, hands down. It was taken along one of the hiking trails at the Iao Valley State Park, and is a shot of the stream down below of the Iao Needle that most people come to visit.

The legend behind the Iao Needle is one of romantic tragedy, and the areas surrounding it are said to have a more magical, romantic aura it. Not scientific, of course, but I will say that while we were hiking through the trails (both marked and unmarked), there certainly was something more magical, more intimate about what we were seeing.

Taking this photo in particular, for example, was pure magic. We were completely surrounded by tree cover, and the sound of the rushing stream practically echoed in your head, if not actually echoed out loud. The rocks in the water were so welcoming, and I managed to find one large enough for me and my camera, and safe enough from the water, to take a few shots like this one.

We were viewing a part of the island that had been mostly untouched for centuries, and aside from the 3-pound piece of 21st century technology I had in my hands, it felt like we were viewing the stream the same way the ancient Hawaiians had seen it themselves so long ago. That was pure magic.

Hibiscus

Taken by Kris Nelson on February 19th, 2009
Location: Ka’anapali Beach, Maui

This week’s Sunday Photo is another one of my new favorites from our most recent trip to Maui. I normally don’t a lot of portraits or floral photographs, but when I found a small group of pink hibiscus flowers somewhat hidden along the sands at Ka’anapali Beach, I couldn’t pass it up.

Seeing that this is already the last weekend in March (wow) and we just received a good helping of snow here in Chicago after 4 weeks of more spring like weather, here’s to hoping that this little treasure of warmer memories will bring us nicer days after we thaw out.

West Maui Mountains

Taken By Kris Nelson on February 26th, 2009
Location: Off the West Maui Coast

Our Sunday Photo this week was taken from our dinner cruise with the Pacific Whale Foundation last month. We try to schedule a dinner cruise on each of our trips because they have so much to offer (if you find the right one). Not only do you get dinner and drinks, you get to spend the evening out on the water, an even closer view of the sunset, and you get to meet and talk story with other visitors to the island.

We had lovely weather for this dinner cruise, as evident by the photo. While this picture is nice enough to make our weekly series here, it’s no substitute for seeing this same view for yourself. The air was so calm and clear that evening, you could see almost every little detail of the mountains from out on the water. Everything from the cars driving along the highway to houses up in the hills and all the trees, hills, ridges, and shadows along the mountains. Truly one of those quiet, but awe-inspiring views.

You can read more about our dinner cruise this trip in this entry of our trip journal.

Hamoa Beach

Taken By Kris Nelson on February 23rd, 2009
Location: Hamoa Beach, Hana, Maui

This week’s Sunday Photo is from our most recent visit to Hana and the east side of the island. It was taken at Hamoa Beach, which is only a few miles further passed the town of Hana itself.

I’ve always had a thing for beach photos, and really enjoy a nice stretch of sand and a blue sky wherever I can get one. But there was something so peaceful and serene about Hamao Beach that I hadn’t found on any of the other beaches we’ve been to on Maui. I think a good part of it might be due to the fact it’s on the east side of the island and rather secluded from everywhere else.

It took us three trips to Hana to find this beach. We drove to Hana ourselves this trip and the first two visits were with different tour companies. We saw a lot of great things with those tours, but we never stopped at Hamoa Beach.  Maybe they’re trying to keep in a secret. :)

Sunday Photo: Hanawi Falls

Sunday, March 8, 2009

Hanawi Falls

Taken by Kris Nelson on February 23rd, 2009
Location: Mile Marker 24, Road to Hana, Maui

We had an amazing time driving to Hana this year. Our past two visits along the windy road was with a tour group, so while we learned so much from the tour guides, many of our photo opportunities were rushed.

Since we made the drive this time, and stayed in Hana overnight, we literally had all day to enjoy the sights and stops along the way. In particular, we saved quite a bit of time for hiking up to lesser known waterfalls and actually having time to take more than just 2-3 pictures of them each.

This week’s Sunday Photo showcases one of the results of having that extra time to ourselves. It’s of Hanawi Falls, about 10 miles before Hana. Compare that to the one from last year when I had all of 90 seconds to shoot before getting back on the bus.

Hanawi Falls

As you can see, quite a difference. It’s worth mentioning that it was raining pretty hard last year when I took this photo (you can see it in the black part of the cave in the bigger version), and I’ve also had a ton more practice in the past year, too.

Touching on that last point about having a lot more practice between this and our last trip, I’m still going through the volumes of photos I’ve taken this trip, and have been pretty happy with the results. Sunday Photo: Maui Rainbow

Maui Rainbow
Taken by Kris Nelson on February 25th, 2009
Location: Sheraton Maui Resort in Ka'anapali, Maui

It was another great trip to Maui this year, and wouldn't you know it, we're back here in Chicago now and it's SNOWING!

I have my work cut out for me in the next week or so. There were so many great experiences we've had this trip that I still need to share here at the blog. There are literally a ton (almost 3,000) photos to go through, but this week's Sunday Photo was very easy to pick. It was just one of the many rainbows we saw almost every morning from our lanai at the Sheraton Maui Resort.

Some seemed rather far away, as if they were connecting the islands of Lanai and Molokai in the distance. Others, like this one, seemed to be close enough to touch. When I saw the boat pictured here sail almost directly through it, I knew it would make a great shot.  What do you think?

Maui Tweetup
Taken by Cindy Nelson on February 21st, 2009
Location: Kalama Park in Kihei, Maui

Wow, it's been a fast first week here on Maui. There have been so many great moments so far, and the most recent one occurred yesterday at Whale Day in Kihei at Kalama Park. Two of my friends from Twitter, Dave (aka @raatz) and Liza (aka @AMauiBlog) came out to have a little Maui tweetup. We had a great time talking story and listening to some of the live music at the festival. It was really nice getting their insight to the island and about everyday life on Maui.

Mahalo again, Dave and Liza, for taking the time to come down to Whale Day and saying Aloha! It was just another one of the many great memories we'll have from this year's trip.

A hui ho!

Sunday Photo: We're Back '09

Haleakala Sunrise
Taken by Kris Nelson on February 16th, 2009
Location: Haleakala Summit, Maui

Okay, so today's Monday, not Sunday. But I hope that you'll agree that this one was worth waiting the extra day.  As we did last year, this week's photo is straight from our current visit to the Valley Isle. And as I've been mentioning for months now, this year's trip was the long awaited visit to Haleakala for the sunrise.

All told, we spent close to 4 hours at Haleakala, starting shortly after 5am and making stops at various views on the way back down. It was everything I had hoped it would be, and from a photography standpoint, I probably could've stayed up there the entire day. I'll have more details about the entire morning soon, but I can tell you one this.  I left the summit this morning more determined than ever to return to relive the experience this September.

The Winding Road
Taken by Kris Nelson on April 15th, 2007
Location: Hana Highway, East Maui

This photo was taken on our Road to Hana tour last April. It was a stop the driver made on our way back from Hana later in the tour, and I walked ahead, got low to the ground, and snapped this shot.

Next Week
This time next week, we'll be boarding a plane on our way to Maui! As mentioned previously, next week's photo will be posted directly from the Valley Isle.

Sunday Photo: Special 50th Edition

Sunday, February 1, 2009

Cheeseburger in Paradise
Cheeseburger in Paradise
Taken by Kris Nelson on September 10th, 2007
Location: Cheeseburger in Paradise, Lahaina

Wow, where does the time go? Not only are the final weeks before our upcoming trip to Maui just flying by, this week's photo in our Sunday Photo series marks the 50th edition in a series I started back in October '07. That's a lot of Sundays, and something that I've had a lot of fun sharing.

This week's photo was taken on one of our visits to Cheeseburger in Paradise in Lahaina. What we hadn't noticed in previous meals there was that the chairs all had different place names on the back of them. We probably didn't notice because we were enjoying the view of the harbor from the upstairs dining area.

Anyway, there were a few chairs that said Lahaina, Oahu, Waikiki, and of course, Maui. Seemed like a pretty neat thing at time, so we picked up the camera and snapped away. Cheeseburger is one of those places that has a lot of neat little things and signs hanging up all over the place, and I snapped a few others as well. This one was another one of my favorites.

Welcome to Lahaina

I can't really vouch for the accuracy of those numbers back from 1846, but it was still intriguing none-the-less. View the larger version of the photo to get a better look at the numbers I'm referring to.

Happy 50!!!
50 seems to be a popular number these days. Here are a few fun facts related to the 50 milestone:
  • Most people already know that Hawaii was the 50th U.S. state.
  • Not as many people realize that Hawaii will be celebrating 50 years of statehood on August 21st of this year.
  • February 28th, 2009 will be our 50th day on Maui going back to June '06.
  • Last year, we brought my mom to Maui as a gift for her 50th birthday.
  • There are 60 minutes in an hour, but I probably spend 50 of them wishing I was on Maui. :)

2 More Weeks

Sunday Photo: 'Alau Islet

'Alau Islet
'Alau Islet
Taken by Kris Nelson on April 15th, 2008
Location: Koki Beach, East Maui

Another photo this week that was featured in our Maui Photo Day Calendar recently. This shot was taken from Koki Beach along the East Maui coast on our Road to Hana tour last year. Perhaps the most intriguing thing about this small islet is the handful of coconut palms resting atop, seemingly all by there lonesome.

There are various stories about how those palm trees made it to the top of that rocky cliff, but we're content for now just to enjoy the view. We'll be revisiting this spot, as well as a few others near Hana on our trip next month.

Sunday Photo: Base of Wailua Falls

Base of Wailua Falls
Base of Wailua Falls
Taken by Kris Nelson on April 15th, 2008
Location: Wailua Falls, East Maui

This week's Sunday Photo comes to you thanks to our Maui Photo Day Calendar, and is a view from the base of Wailua Falls along the Road to Hana. If you've been using our Day Calendar on your iGoogle page (mahalo for that), you'd likely noticed that this month's theme has been the Road to Hana, and this photo here was featured this past Thursday.

Wailua Falls is a popular spot along the Hana Hwy, and often a place where many people turn around to head back. Having your photo taken in front of the falls gives folks at home some sense of how tall this waterfall is, but it's even bigger in person. In fact, this being the second time we've stopped here, I myself didn't appreciate the size of this towering sight until I was able to climb down the rocks to the base and take photos like this. Truly one of the highlights of my day.

4 More Weeks
Still counting down to our next trip and more great photos in our Sunday Photo series. Be sure to countdown with us here at the blog as February 15th gets closer and closer.

Sunday Photo: Front Row Seats

Front Row Seats
Front Row Seats
Taken by Kris Nelson on September 19th, 2007
Location: Ka'anapali Beach, Maui

A simple, warm, and inviting photo this week. These are a few of the beach chairs and cabanas that you'll find outside of resorts along Ka'anapali Beach. The ones pictured here are out front of the Ka'anapali Ali'i, and while accommodations vary by resort, many have some form of rentals for you to use to enjoy the sun. Some resorts, like our favorite Sheraton Maui, have full fledged beach cabanas. Those are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so you need to get to the beach early to snatch one up.

5 More Weeks
We're down to only five weeks before we're off to Maui again. Count down the Sundays with us here in the Sunday Photos series and we look forward to taking more great photos to feature for many more Sundays to come.

Sunday Photo: Black Rock at Night

Sunday, January 4, 2009

Black Rock at Night
Black Rock at Night
Taken by Kris Nelson on September 12th, 2007
Location: Ka'anapali, Maui

E komo mai to our first Sunday Photo of 2009!

Yesterday's Travel Tradition post made me more than just hungry. The unanticipated tangent at the end about walking along Ka'anapali Beach at night led me on a stroll down memory lane of all the peaceful, and romantic, walks we've taken on Maui. So this week, I'm featuring two shots I've taken of Black Rock at night, to carry over some of that atmosphere I started writing about yesterday.

The first one above is a shot of the torches lit on Black Rock at around 9pm. Not only do the torches that line the cliff look so gorgeous against the dark night sky, we're often memorized by the reflections they make along the water below. If you close your eyes, you can hear the waves washing onto the shore, and if you suddenly get chicken skin (goosebumps), that could just be from the gentle breeze off the water.

So let's see. You're on one for the most beautiful beaches on the island, Ka'anapali Beach, which is surprisingly empty at this time of night. The torches on Black Rock are dancing for you in the night sky, along with a gentle ocean breeze and the sounds the waves make as they caress the sand. What else could possibly be missing? Oh right, the stars!!!

Black Rock at Night

This photo was taken roughly in the same spot, instead looking higher up in the sky and as a longer exposure. The slower shutter speed is what is causing the torches to look huge, but the real treat is all the stars above the cliff. For those of us on the mainland that live in highly populated areas, star-filled skies are often hard to come by. Maybe you get used to it by living in Hawaii, but we don't think it ever would for us.

That about completes the puzzle, now doesn't it?

New Photos Coming Soon
Can you believe our Sunday Photos series has been running for over a year now and has close to 50 photos in it? The well is starting to get a little dry, but luckily we leave for Maui in just six weeks, so we'll have plenty of photos to share each week for the remainder of 2009 when we return.

Sunday Photo: Road-side Coral Reef

Road-side Coral Reef
Road-side Coral Reef
Taken by Kris Nelson on June 4, 2006
Location: Above West Maui

This week we're featuring one last photo from our '06 helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. Taken somewhere over West Maui on Hwy 30 between Kahului and Lahaina, you can see some of the amazing coral that goes right up to the shoreline. That drive along Hwy 30 has more than its share of amazing views by itself, but little did we know there was even more beauty hiding just below the ocean surface.

Like last week, check out the Maui from Above photoset in our photo gallery if you want to see more photos from this helicopter tour. And also like last week, we're featuring this photo today on our Maui Photo Day Calendar gadget.

Sunday Photo: Hidden Waterfall

Sunday, December 21, 2008

Hidden Waterfal
Hidden Waterfall
Taken by Kris Nelson on June 4, 2006
Location: Somewhere above Maui

Continuing from last week's photo, here is another shot from high above Maui that we took on our helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. This hidden waterfall is one of the many that you can only see from a helicopter, and surely the vantage point from a helicopter window can't do justice to the actual size of this towering sight.

I don't know where exactly we were above Maui when I took this photo, so trying to identify this particular waterfall is rather tricky. We did receive a DVD of our helicopter tour (which was well worth the additional $20), and I've been meaning to watch it for the past few weeks now. Maybe that will help put some context to where about this treasure was found, but even if it remains nameless, it's still amazing!

If you'd like to see more photos from this helicopter tour, you can see them in our Maui from Above photoset in our photo gallery. Also, if you are already using our Maui Photo Day Calendar gadget, you'll notice that this photo is featured as today's gem.

Sunday Photo: Wailea from Above

Wailea from Above
Wailea from Above
Taken by Kris Nelson on June 4, 2006
Location: Above Wailea

The week's Sunday Photo is from our first trip to Maui, and also from our first helicopter tour. While a good helicopter tour can be one of the most expensive things you can do on your visit to the Valley Isle, we really enjoyed it. We did a 60-minute island tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, and the weather was absolutely perfect.

This photo is looking South along the South Maui coast. Starting at the top of this picture, that big stretch of land sticking out into the ocean is Pu'u Ola'i at Makena State Park. Just on the other side of that is Big Beach. That first small beach just below Pu'u Ola'i in this photo is Maluaka Beach, which we also visited this past April. I've added notes for other places seen in this photo, so click on the photo to go to the Flickr page and see the rest.

While we don't have plans for another helicopter tour during this upcoming trip, I certainly would like to do another one sometime soon. If you'd like to see more photos from this helicopter tour, you can see them in our Maui from Above photoset in our photo gallery.

Sunday Photo: Maui Cliff Dive

Maui Cliff Dive
Maui Cliff Dive
Taken by Kris Nelson on April 14, 2008
Location: Maui Cliff Dive, Ka'anapali

The week's Sunday Photo is of an old favorite or ours, the Black Rock Cliff Dive Ceremony at the Sheraton Maui Resort. Not only is it one of our arrival day traditions, we'll probably watch it 3-4 more times while we're staying at the Sheraton. It can also be seen as part of the Ka'anapali Sunset Luau that takes place twice a week on the grounds of the Sheraton, which is a relatively small luau seating-wise, making the entire experience that much more intimate and memorable.

If you'd like to learn more about this sunset dive from Pu'u Keka'a (Black Rock), you can check it out in our Sights and Tours section, the previous Sunday Photo post featuring the cliff dive, and our Black Rock Photos in our Photo Gallery.

Sunday Photo: View from Papawai Lookout

Sunday, November 30, 2008

Papawai 001
Papawai 001
Taken by Kris Nelson on June 7, 2006
Location: Papawai Scenic Lookout, Maalaea

When writing about the Lahaina Bypass yesterday, I was looking for any photos that we might have taken from along Hwy 30 going to or from the Kahului Airport. Alas, I came up empty (another todo for February). But in the process, I thumbed through the photos we had taken from the Papawai Scenic Lookout, which is also along Hwy 30. Another one of our annual traditions is to stop off at this lookout on the travel day home, and give one last Aloha to Maui before we leave. It's always a bittersweet moment.

On the plus side, I was reading up on places to Whale Watch in our latest Maui guidebook, and it pointed out that this scenic lookout is actually a great place to catch the whales that frequent the area during the winter months. Come to think about it, and looking at the spectacular view in the photo above, it does seem like a great place to whale watch. To top it off, the Pacific Whale Foundation actually sets up a little educational spot at the lookout with one of their volunteers to help raise awareness and give out pointers for what you're able to see during peak viewing times. That sounds pretty cool.

So take a good look at the photo above, because in a few months, I might be posting one just like it, only with a few happy mammals in it.

Sunday Photo: Lahaina Harbor

Sunday, November 23, 2008

Lahaina Harbor
Lahaina Harbor
Taken by Kris Nelson on September 21, 2007
Location: Lahaina Harbor, Lahaina

If you're looking to do any type of cruise or sail in West Maui, there is a good chance you'll end up down at Lahaina Harbor.  That's where this week's photo was taken, during one of our traditions each trip to Maui.  Two weeks is a lot of time to spend on the Valley Isle, and a lot of time to gather so many new memories.  Each year, we like to top off that last evening in paradise with a sunset cruise along the coast of West Maui, catching that final sunset before we leave for home the next day.  Sort of bittersweet, come to think of it.

One our first trip, we did our final night cruise with Teralani, which actually picked us up right on Ka'anapali Beach in front of Whalers Village.  The following year, when this photo was taken, we were aboard the Ocean Quest vessel for the Lahaina Sunset Coctail Cruise with the Pacific Whale Foundation.  Last year, well, we were booked for a return sail with the PWF, however, after our first of three boat rides that trip, we realized that the motion of the ocean wasn't agreeing with all of us that week.  No fear, though, as I think we're getting back on that horse and giving the PWF cruise another shot in February.  We really can't wait.

Mahalo, and have a great week and a great Thanksgiving holiday everyone.

Sunday Photo: Swimming Honu

Sunday, November 16, 2008

Swimming Honu
Swimming Honu
Taken by Kris Nelson on April 22, 2008
Location: Sheraton Maui Resort, Ka'anapali

As I mentioned yesterday, we're headed back to the Sheraton for the fourth year in a row, come February. Although there was the thought of using my aunt's timeshare or even looking for somewhere else to stay, we would have missed out on our almost daily greetings from the honu (sea turtles) near Black Rock.

You see, we save up and splurge on the ocean front rooms at the Sheraton Maui Resort, and not only do you get views like this one from your own private lanai, you get to see the sea turtles that swim near Black Rock in Ka'anapali.  There will also be the occasional snorkeller swimming nearby as well (and the ones that decide to where their white T-shirt in the water, we call those albino sea turtles) since the area is often regarded as one of the better snorkeling areas in West Maui.  And while we aren't water sport people ourselves, we have the next best thing from the vantage point on our lanai.

Almost everytime we're out on our balcony, whether it's first thing in the morning, coming back from breakfast, or stopping back to our room after time at the pool, we'd take a moment to see one of these fun creatures poke his head out of the water.  In some cases, we've seen two and even three turtles all nearby in the same place, and they'll even stay near the surface for a good minute or two before diving down back out of sight.

Now, since we're not sea people like I mentioned, I had to use my 300mm telephoto lens to get this close up.  Even then, this photo is cropped to get a better view.  The only time we've gotten super close is at the Maui Ocean Center and their Turtle Lagoon exhibit.  As you can see, they look a little less friendly up close.

Big Beach
Footsteps in the Sand

We're going back to Maluaka Beach this week with this simple little snapshot of footprints in the sand. As I mentioned last time, there weren't too many people enjoying this stretch of sand when we were there. That allowed me to set up this little shot of my footsteps in the sand just before they were washed out by the waves. Sure, there are beaches all over the world and there isn't necessarily anything "Maui" about this photo, but I and anyone else that have visited the beaches on Maui understand.

I actually stumbled onto this photo when looking for a new photo for my Facebook profile. A few other past Sunday Photos that have made it into the final round of consideration include the Grumpy Honu and, of course, a Maui Sunset. If you're on Facebook and want to talk story, be sure to look us up or send us a note. :)

Sunday Photo: Big Beach

Big Beach
Big Beach
Taken by Kris Nelson on April 22, 2008
Location: Big Beach in Makena State Park
Buy This Photo

There's always enough room on the golden sands of Big Beach in Makena State Park, located near almost the very end of South Maui. According to some guides, this beach is a whopping 2/3 mile long from end to end, and while I was taking photos, it took me a good 20 minutes to walk it just one way!

It truly is a lovely beach, especially if you're looking to get away from the crowds of the high-end resort areas or downtown Lahaina. No matter what you're looking to do, whether it's throwing around the frisbee, playing volleyball, body-boarding, you name it, you'll be able to enjoy it until your heart's content without worrying about tripping over someone else or getting in somebody's way.

Big Beach is kind of a drive if you're staying in Kapalua or Ka'anapali, so you should plan for spending a good part of your day in South Maui. Which isn't that big of a concern because you have Wailea and Kihei nearby, so your shopping and dining needs will be well met. There are also concerns and advisories about thefts and break-ins occurring in the different parking lots at Makena State Park, so it requires you to be a little bit smarter about what you're bringing with you and don't leave anything in the car that is valuable to you or someone else.

You can follow these tips from our friends at Go Visit Hawaii and you should be okay.

Originally uploaded by webnelly

Continuing on with our showcase of Maui beaches, we head further down South of Kihei to the northern part of Makena in a little secluded spot known as Maluaka Beach. Now, by secluded I mean it's not on a main roadway or across of tons of shops like Kama'ole or Ka'anapali. Nor is it nestled near large and glitzy resorts like Kapalua or Napili. Maluaka is a little off the normal route and calls the Maui Prince Hotel it's only large-scale neighbor.

You'll find this one in a few of the guide books and on a handful of websites that cover Maui beaches, but otherwise you don't normally hear many people talking about Maluaka Beach unless they've stayed at the Maui Prince Hotel. As mentioned, it's located in South Maui, but it's not that crowded when compared to Big Beach or the resorts in Wailea nearby. It still has a nice view of Molokini off in the distance, and Cindy and my mom caught a glimpse of a whale breach just off shore when we were there in April. I, unfortunately was off taking photos and missed it, but I give them the benefit of the doubt. They're good people. :)

You'll probably read elsewhere that this beach is one that is referred to as a "turtle town", something that attracts snorkelers and scuba divers which we did see in the hour or so that we stayed there. Being small and quiet, there were also a few families out in the water together, which is always fun to see.

If you're on your way to Wailea or Big Beach, try to squeeze in sometime to check out Maluaka Beach for yourself. Hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as we did.

Mahalo.

Who's up for a little beach hopping? I'm starting a beach theme for the next few Sundays and the first in that series is the above photo of Kama'ole Beach I taken this past April. Although it was a partly cloudy day for a good amount of the time we spent there that day, one of the things I like about this photo is the details in the water right at the bottom. I just love walking along the shoreline and snapping photos, but when you can look down and the water is so crystal clear as it washes over your feet, it's pretty neat.

Kama'ole Beach I was the first stop on our beach hopping day during our '08 Trip, and it was a great way to start the day. For us, coming from the Lahaina/Ka'anapali area, it is a little bit of a drive, so to get the most out of your trip down to South Maui, be sure to make a day out of it and plan to stay awhile. Kama'ole Beach I is actually the northern most of a series of 3 beaches that share the Kama'ole name. Beaches II and III each offer something a little different, and are more popular with the local residents than Beach I. Still, with a view of Molokini, parking nearby (that fills up fast), lifeguard, restrooms and showers and a mini mall across the street for a quick snack, you pretty much have everything you need for a day in the sun.

What I thought was neat about this particular beach in the chain of 3 was that there were a few hours along the north end right up against the sand, with only a small line of bushes separating them. The one below, for example, looks like it would be a blast to live in, having full sized windows and stunning views of the ocean. The sunsets alone will probably make you weep with joy. I can only imagine, though, that buying a house like that comes with a pretty hefty price tag. Oh well.

As mentioned in the comments from the previous Sunday Photo, this photo was also taken from our time at the Sheraton, and to my amazement, I haven't featured it yet in our Sunday Photo series. Of all the photos from our trips to Maui, this has to be one of my favorites. You can read more about the details at my photography site.

This shot was also one from of my first days with a DSLR camera, and I just remember being so overwhelmed with all the options. I am living proof, however, that a little luck and a beautiful canvas can still lead to magical things. Now, two years and a few thousand photos later, this is still the desktop wallpaper on my primary computer at home and I even have a 20" x 30" version of this hanging on the wall in my home office.

Even though I see this photo everyday, this scenic view at the Sheraton is still one of the first spots we go to every year. It really has that "welcome back" feel for us. I hope you enjoy it.

Sunday Photo: Maui Vista

It's been raining nonstop here in Chicago for the last 48 hours and I really need to see the sun again. For our Sunday Photo this week, I chose one of the many shots I enjoy taking from our lanai at the Sheraton. This one has just about everything but the sand.

In the distance, you have the island of Lanai with it's fluffy white clouds overhead. Aside from that, the bluest of blue skies. Next, one of the few palm trees that greet us every morning on the oceanfront lawn at the Sheraton, standing tall and dancing in the gentle ocean breeze to get my attention. Last, but not least, a quiet reef area behind Black Rock that, for late on a Saturday morning, is currently absent of the regular snorkelers that often frequent these waters.

This photo makes me miss the island, yet it also makes me feel fortunate that all of our hard work throughout the year gives us the opportunity to enjoy such a paradise, even if only two weeks at a time. Some sources will argue that paying extra for an ocean front room isn't worth the money, but we feel differently. We know it's a big splurge and we could save a ton of money by getting a room in the different part of the resort and just walking a few steps to see the ocean, but for daily views like this one from your own private balcony whenever you step outside, I'm okay paying extra for the time being.

Sunday Photo: Warm and Golden Maui Sunset

By my estimates, it's time for another sunset photo in our weekly series. Checking the posts here filed under the sunset category, it looks like it's about every month or so. I was just writing about sunsets the other day on my newest photography site, so I was sort of in that type of mood this weekend.

In any case, this shot was taken from the Teralani on our first sunset cruise back in 2006, which nowadays seems like ages ago. The orange sky at this time of day and under these conditions leaves a warm and inviting impression on you and it makes you feel so alive and ready to do it all again tomorrow. While some of my favorite sunsets are the ones that drop right down to the ocean at the horizon and leaves a sparkling reflection in the water, this one is a keeper, too. Here, the sun is escaping behinds clouds as they hover above the island of Moloka'i, and catching it at halfway through the event gives it just enough definition around the edges to come out perfect.

Mahalo, and have a great week.

It's Labor Day Weekend, and if you're having a BBQ and spending some time outside tonight, you might have a few tiki torches nearby. Well, if not, here's one that's about 4,000 miles away.

This shot is a close-up of one of the torches that is lit atop Black Rock as part of the nightly cliff dive ceremony at the Sheraton Maui Resort. Obviously there isn't much to this photo, but for West Maui fans, it means a little something extra.

Sunday Photo: Sailboat at Ka'anapali Beach

While a good amount of ocean tours operate out of Lahaina or Ma'alaea Harbor, a few of the come right to you! This photo is a shot of the sailboat Gemini approaching the beach in Ka'anapali just in front of the Westin Maui Resort. For those staying in Ka'anapali, having these vessels come right to your door is a big plus rather than having to drive to the harbor, finding and paying for parking, and then waiting for your boat to exit out into the ocean (which can be an event in itself).

The Teralani is another boat you'll see often, and one that we did back in 2006. It was great because we were able to hang out at Whalers Village a while after check-in for the tour and after the cruise was over, we went back for ice cream at Ha'agan Dazs. :)

Only the smaller ships are able to pick up passengers along the beach, so those tours are usually limited to cocktail cruises and snorkel or scuba adventures. The bigger whale watch tours and dinner cruises all have larger ships and those are out of the harbors mentioned above.

Have a favorite tour company of your own, or have experiences with any of the ones mentioned here? Share your stories with us.

Boy, to say that I've been busy these last few weeks would be a big understatement. I thought posting this little photo would help take the edge off.

This was taken at BJ's Chicago Pizzeria in Lahaina. One of our favorite activities when going out to eat on vacation in Maui is trying different tropical drinks. Not only do they help you enjoy your time on the island, they usually look pretty neat, too.

With this photo, I decided to play around with Photoshop a little bit and bring out the colors of the drinks themselves by graying out everything else. It's a technique I was playing around with last year and something I featured in a previous post for Black Rock.

Now, back to the busy part. I've been working tirelessly on getting photos uploaded to my new photo store. There are still a lot of photos to process and upload, but I should be ready for a formal announcement sometime this week. However, since I feel it's ready enough for a sneak peak, I thought I'd give a first notice here for my readers at Ka'anapali Dreamin'.

So, if you like what you see here in the Sunday Photos series and are looking for some beautiful images of Maui to decorate your home, workspace or to give the gift of Maui to a loved one, be the first to check out Maui Wall Candy. Be sure to look for a formal announcement this week as well and checking back regularly as I process and upload a long list of photos I'm looking to share with all of you.

Originally uploaded by webnelly

Not the sharpest photo in my collection, but this shot of the beach at Whalers Village (taken from aboard the Teralani) is nice view of a common pastime of shoppers at Whalers after dinner: sitting along the beach after sunset. In the background, there is Leilani's on the right, the Rusty Harpoon farther back in the center, and Hula Grill on the left. Those familiar with the area will know exactly of where this is. :)

We've been spending quite a bit of time lately thinking about Whalers Village, and Maui in general, as we're starting to get closer to our next trip. We even picked the dates, the last two weeks of February!!! That's only 6 months (and a long Chicago winter away). Kidding aside, here it is nearly the middle of August and we can't believe summer is almost over. Wow.

Also, I've been pretty busy the last week or so working on our new photo store, offering our favorite photos from Maui in a wide range of sizes and all at very affordable prices. We're pretty excited about it and will be sharing more information in the next week or so. Stay tuned.

Time for another sunset shot here for our Sunday Photo series. It's true that you can see a great sunset just about anywhere on Maui (or Hawaii for that matter). One of the extras you can do in West Maui, though, is to hop on a small boat or catamaran with one of the many tour companies offering sunset cocktail cruises and you can get even closer. A nice way to end any day on Maui, for sure. We usually book a cocktail cruise for the last night of our trips as sort of the final send off.

This photo was taken from the lanai of our room at the Sheraton (of course), and forgive me for not being able to remember what particular boat and tour company is pictured in this photo. There are at least half a dozen companies that offer these sunset cruises, and they're all pretty affordable as far as Maui tour standards go. We've gone with two different groups in the past, the Teralani and the Pacific Whale Foundation.

The Teralani was a smaller vessel, and it docked right on the beach near Whalers Village, so that was pretty neat. The PWF boat was much larger and went further out along the West Maui coast than the Teralani, plus part of the cost of the tour goes towards research and education on the islands, so you can't go wrong, either.

If you have had experiences with other sunset cruises while on Maui, don't be shy!!! We'd love to hear from you.

On an island with so much to do, sometimes you just want to take it easy and just enjoy the beautiful weather outside. This week's photo was taken in Lahaina doing just, that. A nice stroll down Front Street near the harbor after a late lunch with a gorgeous blue sky overhead and just a gentle breeze off the water.

There are quite a few spots along Front Street in Lahaina that you can stop and just look out into the water, this being only one of them. The photo was taken just southwest of Cheeseburger in Paradise to give those familiar with the area a point of reference. We're not ones to say any particular spot is better to watch the boats than another, but we do end up here now and again after lunch or just walking downtown throughout the day.

And, if you happen to see the ship below just outside the harbor, fear not that someone might be in trouble. The sailboat has actually been there for many years now, and only silly people like us, who after seeing it for the first time from our oceanside table at Cheeseburger in Paradise asked our waiter if that boat was in danger of sinking. :)

Originally uploaded by webnelly

This shot was taken at the base of Black Rock in Ka'anapali, Maui about 30 minutes prior to sunset. I colored it up a little bit by isolating the green and the sand in the foreground and a few highlighted spots near the boat.

We were at Black Rock for the nightly Cliff Dive Ceremony there, and spotted a ship nearby that was there for the same reason. On some nights, there are keiki (kids) jumping from the rocks as late as five minutes prior to the ceremony, so what you're seeing here is the last few jumps before the ceremony started. You'll see a lot of photos (including mine) that have the normal view of Black Rock from the beach with it's familiar shape (an example), but if you visit the beach, you can walk all the way up to the base of the cliff and you get a completely different perspective of the cliff itself and where he's jumping from.

Even better, if you're out for a late night stroll after an ono dinner along the beach, why not walk all the way over to the base of the cliff while the torches are still lit. You'll be memorized by the flames of the torches that line Black Rock as they dance in the water and the waves below. If you turn around, you can see the nighttime glow of Ka'anapali along the beach as well, as shown here.

Sunday Photo: Inside the Lava Tube

Inside the Lava Tube
Inside the Lava Tube
Originally uploaded by webnelly

Okay, so the first thing you think of when you see this photo isn't really Maui. It's not a shot you'd find on a postcard or on the front cover of a travel guide at the bookstore, but it's still a neat shot.

This was taken from inside the lava tube at Waianapanapa State Park along the Road to Hana. Lava tubes were formed hundreds of years ago by flowing rivers of lava that ran down from the volcanoes, which also was the foundation for many of the black sand beaches as well. They pretty much like caves with two ends forming a tunnel, and were used in the days of the ancient Hawaiians as a safe haven for women and children during battle.

What was neat about this lava tube was that you could easily walk in from one end (although the clearance was about 3 feet) and on the other end was the ocean, with waves crashing in through that opening just like it was on the black sand outside. It was rather windy when we were there this past trip, and the waves were crashing pretty hard. So you could hear the loud sound the waves were making as they slammed into the nearby rocks, and then you would feel the water rushing into the opening of the lava tube (it was pretty cold). Finally, as the water descended back into the ocean, it would run across the small rocks at the base of the tube opening and would make an eerie hissing sound, almost like a sizzling sound.

I loved it so much after taking these photos that I ran back up the rocky stair climb to fetch my video camera from my wife, who was watching with mom from above. After returning to the lava tube, I shot video for about 5 minutes walking into and through the lava tube, seeing other people inside, others climbing on the rocks and one of the holes in the upper area, and also capturing the waves and that sizzle the water was making as the waves left the entrance.

I haven't had much luck encoding and posting that video online so far, but once I do, I'll add a link from this post.

Not many people will argue that the sunsets anywhere on Maui are absolutely spectacular, but we tend to believe that Ka'anapali and Lahaina sunsets are second to none. But at the end of the day, seeing the sunset anywhere in Hawaii is just as magical.

Originally uploaded by webnelly

This photo is from a couple of years back when we first visited Maui. It was taken aboard a water taxi, the Spirit of Lahaina I believe, that was taking us out to the Maui Princess for our Dinner Cruise. It was also our first time at Lahaina Harbor and seeing all the slots and different boats lined up there offering many different activities. Very photo-worthy.

Since then, we've been back quite a few times for other dinner cruises, sunset cocktail cruises, and even a whale watch. While we were in Lahaina last time, there was also a cruise ship "docked." Now, obviously a large cruise ship would certainly not fit in such a small harbor, so that big boat is anchored quite a ways off shore and a water taxi takes it's voyagers to and from the harbor.

While the truth is there is really so much you can do on Ka'anapali Beach, this picture truly captures one of our favorite pastimes, just relaxing on the beach and enjoying a gorgeous day on Maui. That's the island of Lanai out in the distance, topped with the only clouds in the sky (aside from Molokai off to the right out of frame).

Sure, you could probably find days like this on other islands, back on the mainland, or even other parts of the world. I think one of the reasons we get a kick out of these guys is because of the Comcast commercials they had here in Chicago a few years ago with The Slowskys.

Unfortunately, we don't scuba dive and don't get the opportunity to go down under the water and watch these guys swim close up. There are tons of photos on Flickr that people have taken doing just that. Here's one of my favorites. Maybe someday we'll break down, learn to snorkel first and then take the plunge.

Adding in a little piece of trivia, Honomanu Valley means "Valley of the Bird".

Down below in this valley, is a small black sand beach which is a little tricky to get down to. Most that are able to think of driving to access it are driving Jeeps and other vehicles with 4-wheel drive. There is also a very limited amount of space down there, so if you're not one of the early ones, might as well keep on driving.

I'll admit, this isn't the best photo on the web of Wailua Falls along the Road to Hana, but that's going to change soon. We're going back to Hana in two weeks while we're in Maui, so in addition to better photos of these falls, there's going to be many opportunities to capture many new Sunday Photos for weeks to come.

When it comes to sunsets, "Maui No Ka 'Oi" certainly holds its merits. While Haleakala is perhaps the Maui standard for sunrises, just about everywhere in West Maui (and even South Maui for that matter) is the place you want to be at the end of a memorable day on the valley isle. This shot was taken from the Teralani 3 sailboat on their sunset cocktail cruise on our last night from our first trip to Maui, and it's been a hard photo to top. As the description on Flickr says, the only ones with a better view are the lucky folks on that boat off near the horizon.

When staying in the Ka'anapali area, Whalers Village almost becomes a daily stop. With so many great shops and activities, their own whalers museum, and restaurants right along the beach, we can't think of too many other places that good for strolling around and enjoying a sunny afternoon in between trips to the beach and downtown Lahaina.

Sunday Photo: Black Rock Cliff Dive at Sunset

Black Rock Cliff Dive at Sunset
Black Rock Cliff Dive at Sunset
Originally uploaded by webnelly

Perhaps one of my favorite photos that I've taken of one of our favorite activities in Maui. The Black Rock Cliff Dive Ceremony is nightly event that takes place on Black Rock at the Sheraton Maui Resort in Ka'anapali. Each evening at sunset, a man portraying a great Hawaiian Warrior bears a lit torch up the side of Black Rock and offers his lei to the heavens above before he dives into the water below. The dive is accompanied by a Hawaiian chant performed right outside the beach at the Sheraton.

Since we stay at the Sheraton when we visit Maui, we try to take in a cliff dive about 3-4 times a trip. It's actually part of our "just arrived" routine, when we drive in from the airport, drop of our bags, and grab a seat at the Sundowners Bar at the Sheraton and watch the dive while having dinner and sipping on a cool frozen drink. Man, knowing that we'll be back there in six weeks is giving me chills.

It is cool, though, to see just how many people crowd up along the beach to catch a glimpse of the dive ceremony, with video cameras and digital cameras. If you're staying at one of the Ka'anapali resorts or condos, you can't help but stroll along for a glimpse.

Pools of 'Ohe'o
Pools of 'Ohe'o

Accessible from a short hiking trail at Haleakala National Park, 'Ohe'o Gulch, more commonly referred to as the Seven Sacred Pools, is a popular stop for folks visiting Hana. While technically not on the Road to Hana (it's about ten miles past Hana), visitors that continue onto Charles Lindbergh's grave will stop here for a dip.

This photo was actually taken from the bridge on Route 31 that passes over the gulch allowing you to get somewhat of a bird's eye view of the various pools. There are also a few pools on the other side of the bridge that are somewhat hidden, but still as picturesque. The pools themselves fill up rather quickly with visitors, so you if you want to beat the crowds, you're best bet it to get there earlier in the morning. Most guides recommend before 10am, in fact.

If you're a hiker, you're in luck as well, since there are many eye-catching hikes near and around the gulch as well.

Sunday Photo: Black Sand Beach

Black Sand Beach from Above
Black Sand Beach from Above

As a reminder of, and almost a tribute to, how the magical islands of Hawaii were created, the black sand beaches found on her islands are made up of harden lava that has entered the ocean and has been eroded over hundreds and thousands of years into tiny grains of sand.

This black sand beach is from Wai'anapanapa State Park, which can be found along the Road to Hana. It is also accompanied by a series of caves along the shore of the beach, which as legend has it, was where the Hawaiian Princess Popoalaea would come to hide. She was hiding from her cruel husband, Chief Kakae, who eventually discovered her hiding spot and took her life. As a result, there are certain times of the year where the water here turns an eerie red color due to tiny red shrimp that wash up towards the beach. The red water is said to symbolize the blood of Princess Popoalaea.

The beach itself is rather amazing. While we were only there for about 15 minutes as part of a guided tour, I remember the look and the feel of the sand to be almost like a regular beach (maybe a little coarser), with footprints being washed away by the waves and the usual. There was just some part of my mind that still had a hard time grasping that this was actually a beach, and the sand was black. We'd seen pictures and read about it, but now that we were standing there, it seemed surreal.

Be sure to check it out if you haven't yet seen one. And if you've been, let us know your thoughts.

Interesting enough, not as crowded and popular as Kapalua Beach is, just a litte further north on Hwy 30 you'll find the D.T. Fleming Beach Park. You might miss the turn if you're not looking for it (we did), but once you find it, you have practically the entire beach to yourself.

The first thing we noticed when we went was that it was rather windy. I'm not entirely sure if it was because it was slightly overcast or if that's just the normal for this area. In any case, it's a nice stretch of sand and great for enjoying the sun (like my wife) and just walking along the shore taking photos (like me). We're not sure if this beach is actually larger than Kapalua or just felt that way because there was hardly anyone there. It was still nice and quiet and offered some great time to relax.

Check out more photos from D.T. Fleming Beach Park in our Flickr set.

Most people that frequent the Ka'anapali area can recognize Black Rock from the beach, looking North from Whalers Village, or even from an aerial photo (bottom of page). Put in this photo, we actually are looking East towards Black Rock from a Pacific Whale Foundation sunset cruise. We hadn't been able to get this close to the beach from the water up until last year, and had the opportunity to snap a few photos from this view. We didn't, however, get to see the cliff dive ceremony from the cruise, which would have been neat to see.

Lahaina Banyan Tree
Lahaina Banyan Tree
Originally uploaded by webnelly

This very well known tree among Maui visitor and residents was planted by missionaries way back on April 24th, 1873 (Wikipedia). It is a part of Lahaina history and even their social calendar, having it's own birthday party every year hosted by the Lahaina Town Action Committee. What do you buy a tree this big for its birthday anyway?

Perhaps the most amazing thing about this tree, aside from its age, has to be its sheer size. The Wikipedia article listed above says that this banyan tree covers almost 2/3 of an acre. Wow. That makes this giant tree very, very hard to photograph. Perhaps the best way to capture the magnitude of this tree is to view it from space, as in this Google Map. That slightly orange roof building just southeast of the banyan tree is the Old Lahaina Courthouse, which is now run as the Lahaina Visitors Center. It's a fairly decent sized two-story building, but is still obviously dwarfed by the size of this tree.

It's a neat thing to see if you're in Lahaina, and very hard to miss. Hopefully for anyone shopping down Front Street it's not too far out of your way, and definitely worth seeing.

Kapalua Beach
Originally uploaded by webnelly

Kapalua Beach is a lovely beach in West Maui just north of Ka'anapali. It is a crescent beach that is isolated by two rock piers jetting out into the ocean on both sides. You can find an aerial view of the beach (courtesy of Google Maps) from our page here. When viewing that aerial image, this photo was taken from the North lawn area looking South towards the beach and water. When you're on the beach itself, this grassy area doesn't seem to be very accessible because of the construction of the Kapalua Bay resorts going on nearby, but after I saw a few workers taking their lunch break sitting out there (how nice is that) I decided to grab my cameras (photo and video) and went for a walk.

You can find more of our Kapalua Beach photos at our site here or in our Flickr set. You can also check out our Kapalua Beach videos on YouTube.

Ka'anapali at Night
Originally uploaded by webnelly

One of our favorite things to do (almost nightly) after having dinner or just making a trip to Whalers at night is to walk back to the Sheraton along the beach rather than on the walkway. After many walks, I decided I wanted to capture the view of Ka'anapali at night, so I grabbed my tripod and setup a few shots like this one. Between the stars above, the reflections in the water and the soft glow from the lights, it almost seems surreal.

As a point of reference as to the location, I took this right on the sands of Ka'anapali Beach, near the base of Black Rock at the Sheraton, looking south towards the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel, The Whaler, and Whalers Village.

Palm Trees and Blue Skies
Originally uploaded by webnelly

Palm trees are just a plentiful on the islands as beaches and flower leis, but something about them just draws my attention long enough to want to snap a few photos, like this one here. I think one of the things that makes this particular photos one of my favorites is that there's not a cloud in the sky, and the sky itself is such a gorgeous shade of blue, it makes the trees jump at you.

Perhaps one of the easiest photos to take in Hawaii (just look up and "click"), yet it's still fun and enjoyable. Sure, there are palm trees all over the world, and the fact that these are from Maui doesn't make them that special. But still, they are in Maui, so we love them a little bit more just because of that.

Sunset from cocktail cruise
Originally uploaded by webnelly

Perhaps one of the most photographed items in Maui is the spectacular sunsets seen anywhere on or around the island. It's true what some people say, that the sun sets everyone on the planet, you can see it from anywhere, and it happens every day. Regardless, seeing these in Maui is beyond words.

As have many, I have taken my fair share of sunset photos from many different places on the island. This particular photo was shot from aboard the Teralani 3 during our '06 trip. With all the sunset photos I took on that trip, this one perhaps did the best job of capturing the blue sky above the horizon as the sun retreats just off of Molokai. I can't say that I'm an expert with the dozen or so settings on your standard digital SLR, and I have to admit that there is a lot of trial and error that goes on, but it still doesn't take away from the result of a shot like this.

Galaxies and Stars above Ka'anapali Beach

Friday, October 19, 2007

This is one of my favorite photos we took from our last trip to Maui.

We lucked out and had a moonless, cloudless night and I grabbed my tripod, Cindy grabbed the beach towels, and we setup right on Ka'anapali Beach next to Black Rock (on the right) and spent about an hour under the stars. It was a wonderful time that night. I had the tripod buried in the sand, set it to a 30 second exposure, and would start the photo. While the shutter was closed, I'd run back to the beach towel and sit with my wife looking skyward in awe of what we were seeing.

Since we always stay at the Sheraton when in Maui, we have gotten used to enjoying many lovely nights walking along Ka'anapali Beach. With this photo and the others we took that night, it takes us right back to those nighttime strolls along the water as if we were there yesterday.
