It's been raining nonstop here in Chicago for the last 48 hours and I really need to see the sun again. For our Sunday Photo this week, I chose one of the many shots I enjoy taking from our lanai at the Sheraton. This one has just about everything but the sand.
In the distance, you have the island of Lanai with it's fluffy white clouds overhead. Aside from that, the bluest of blue skies. Next, one of the few palm trees that greet us every morning on the oceanfront lawn at the Sheraton, standing tall and dancing in the gentle ocean breeze to get my attention. Last, but not least, a quiet reef area behind Black Rock that, for late on a Saturday morning, is currently absent of the regular snorkelers that often frequent these waters.
This photo makes me miss the island, yet it also makes me feel fortunate that all of our hard work throughout the year gives us the opportunity to enjoy such a paradise, even if only two weeks at a time. Some sources will argue that paying extra for an ocean front room isn't worth the money, but we feel differently. We know it's a big splurge and we could save a ton of money by getting a room in the different part of the resort and just walking a few steps to see the ocean, but for daily views like this one from your own private balcony whenever you step outside, I'm okay paying extra for the time being.
Mahalo.

Kris,
Great photo, no wonder you love the place! And "standing tall and dancing in the gentle ocean breeze" you can really turn a phrase too...
David
And I just read this article:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/weather/09/14/chicago.rainfall/index.html?eref=rss_topstories
on the rain in Chicago. Historic. Hope you came through it okay.
We're still waiting to hear from friends in Orange Texas, where hurricane IKE came ashore yesterday. Hope they evacuated in advance.
Mahalo, David. I'm glad you like the photo. If you're ever near the Sheraton, you can walk up towards the back parking area (near the walkway connecting the golf course and Kahekili Beach) and all the way up the top of the driveway. There is a sign that says "Scenic View" and a path you can follow to see where I took this photo. I could have sworn I've posted it here as a Sunday Photo, but I guess not.
Anyway, that view is pretty close to the type of views in the Hale Moana building we stay at when visiting the Sheraton. We always request a room on the 4th or 5th floor when possible, just to add to the view.
As for the rain here in Chicago, the suburb 0.5 mile from received 9.5" of rain in a two day period. Our condo building doesn't have a basement and the first floor is the parking garage, so we were okay. My brothers live in my mom's basement a mile away, however, and they were busy this weekend. As I mentioned in the other post, it's aggravating and a big hassle, but at the end of the day everything was okay. It's minor in comparison to the type of damage and loss that is happening with the hurricanes this season, so I hope your friends in Texas are okay and not impacted too badly.
