10 things still to do on Maui – An Update

Last October, we posted our list of 10 things we still want to do on Maui. Well, know that we’re back from our most recent trip, I thought it was time to revisit the list and see what progress we’ve made.

Here’s the list again with our updated notes. Check out the previous post if you want to see the original details.

1. Go Whale Watching – DONE
Technically, we can cross this off the list because we did a whale watch with the Pacific Whale Foundation this past April. We say technically because it was the day after whale season officially ended, although we still saw quite a few whales procrastinating on their journeys back to Alaska.

Still going to do this again on our February trip in 2009.

2. Witness a Haleakala Sunrise
Nope, still not yet. Cindy isn’t exactly keen on getting up this early, and I’m not willing to witness this without her. One of us is bound to give in to the other. :)

3. Watch the lighting of the Banyan Tree for Christmas
There’s a potential trip for December in 2009, and while it wouldn’t be for the December 1st lighting of the tree, we’d hope to be around to get some photos of the coolest Christmas Tree in the world.

4. Ring in the New Year on Maui
A better candidate for a second trip in 2009. If we swing a trip in December, we’d try to stretch it across Christmas and New Years Day.

5. Dress up for Halloween and party on Front Street
Probably still a few years away. Potential for this happening when we get to planning our full month on Maui.

6. Celebrate Valentine’s Day under the stars
2009 for sure. I can’t say that I’d be able to book the Dinner Under the Stars at the Sheraton again for the exact date, but I think something that magical deserves a grace period of a day or two, don’t you?

7. Spend both of our birthdays in Maui – DONE, sort of
One down, one to go. I had a Whale of a Birthday this year, and we might get to Maui for Cindy’s birthday in August of 2010 at the earliest.

8. Visit Lanai and Molokai
This one has sort of fell off our radar since we originally posted this. Maybe a day excursion on one of our upcoming trips. Not related to Maui, but we’re also planning to get to the Big Island for the first time and return to Oahu for a few days as well. Heck, I wouldn’t rule out a return to Kauai, either.

9. Go Parasailing (at least Cindy wants to)
This one might come off the list. Not sure if it looks as exciting any more.

10. Take a professional astronomy tour – ALMOST
Well, not for a lack of effort. We had scheduled the Tour of the Stars viewing at the Hyatt Regency Maui this year. And after the first one was canceled, we rescheduled for a second attempt, but no luck. We’ll be trying again next year.

If you’d like to learn more about our past trips and take a look at our future plans, you can check out the Trip Details page of the Our Trips section of our site. There you can find all the details of our past trips, including itineraries, journal entries, blog posts, photos and even a few videos.

And as always, we encourage you to share your own experiences on Maui with us. We’d love to hear from you.

Aloha and Mahalo.

Glad to see you’re experiencing more of Maui! I stumbled on a good article that may give you some more ideas. 101 Things to do in Maui

It isn’t from the free magazine that they give away. I found some good ideas on it. Hope you get something out of it. Keep posting, I love to read about other Hawaii addicts!

Ah…as much as we want to do everything when we go to Hawaii, it’s always nice to have a to do list that keeps you coming back.

If you go see sunrise at Haleakala on the first day you arrive, it’s so much easier. We’re always jet lagged. So, it’s really easy to get up and go the first or second morning we’re there.

It is cold, though, so brings gloves, ski hat, wind breaker, and wear as many layers as you can possible wear. It is well worth the trip!

After you’re done, stop off at the Kula Lodge for breakfast. The view there is tremendous!

    Jonathon,

Thanks for the link. That big of a list definitely takes some time and dedication to put together. Seems like a nice resource for just about anyone. We have our list of 10 things we do on every trip, and since we go for two weeks at a time, that still leaves enough time to do a few new places to see. My favorite is finding new beaches and places to take photos, while Cindy will go anywhere she can sit in the sun.

As for more of us Hawaii addicts, you should check out Sheila’s website, Go Visit Hawaii. I’ll tell friends it’s like a support group for people like me who go on and on about Hawaii all the time. :)

    Sheila,

Haleakala is certainly on my list for next time. It’s been 3 trips so far, and we’re long overdue. It will be a compromise, so I’ll have to bribe my wife with something she really wants to do.

We usually end up doing more guided tours than driving ourselves, so I’ll be sure to look for one that might stop at Kula Lodge afterwards. I also like to take a lot of photos along the way, which I can’t (legally) do when I’m driving. Especially on the side of a volcano.

I was reading somewhere (of course, now I can’t find the link) that the sunrises at Haleakala are sometimes hit or miss based on the weather that morning. Regardless, I’ve heard it is cold as you described, so since our next trip is in February and we live in Chicago, we should be used to it.

Mahalo to both of you for posting.
