I've enjoyed reading your blog and seeing your pictures as my wife and I prepare for our third trip to Maui this January and our daughter's first. We went for our honeymoon and our first anniversary, but haven't been back since 2004. Suffice it to say, we are VERY excited. Coincidentally, we got married in September of 2003 (the 26th) and we also live in Chicago (Uptown neighborhood). Maui in January will be a definite upgrade over winter here. I'm a bit nervous about January being the "coldest" and "rainiest" season on Maui (we've only really been there in October/November), but when I think of the alternative, I guess I have nothing to worry about. However, you did mention that you didn't walk on the beach at night during your February trip - is that because it was too chilly or windy?

We've stayed in Kapalua two previous times and will be staying there again this time. We like the pace on the northwest side of the island and though it can be a bit windy or wet at times, it's still our favorite. If you're looking for ways to economize on future trips, I highly recommend renting a condo, either in Kapalua or elsewhere. We've stayed at Kapalua Ridge before and got a great deal on a place there this time too (http://www.vrbo.com/192172). The Kapalua resort is great and with close access to the Ritz pool, DT Fleming beach and Kapalua Bay Beach. Our entire 10 day trip (having used frequent flier miles) will cost around $2K. While we will go out to dinner two or three times, we can pick up reasonably priced food and wine at Costco, Walmart or Safeway on the way from the airport, have picnic lunches most afternoons and grill out by the pool most evenings.

Thanks for sharing your stories and insights about one of our favorite vacation spots!
